Question Top Speed in Space

So, reading about light-years in space etc., and all that other awesome stuff, I was thinking...

For argument's sake, we have the following scenario:

Assuming you get into space, with infinite fuel, and nothing in the direction you intend on going for infinite distance:

If you kept accelerating, would it eventually get to the point where you would be travelling faster than the speed of light? I don't see how there's really a "top speed" in space, since there's nothing to slow you down (like air/whatever).

Of course, you could always hit a huge rock, but you get my drift.

Thoughts?

I think Newton said that an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by an outside force. In space there are various gases, so there actually are forces that would slow you down in space. But assuming there was no such force, presumably you could travel faster than the speed of light.

That said I am not a physicist. Matt (Iconoclast) is a high school science teacher, so he could probably give you greater insight on this than I could.

Alex, surely Jesus could travel faster than the speed of light coz he invented it, otherwise he could just slow it down while he takes it on over 186,000 miles, and we will just sit with some brown beauties and ale and wait for them to sort it out.
