None of this wishy-washy stuff here. Show us a full ladder. And I think Brisbane will improve too, but no WAY top 8; stop reminiscing about Fitzroy and thinking all things Lions are top stuff.
I'll post my ladder soon too haha

North Melbourne (will improve, but lack key position players) 14. St Kilda (I hope an asteroid falls from the sky and demolishes the whole club-fingers crossed) 15. Gold Coast 16. Adelaide (should sack the list manager) 17. Port Adelaide 18. GWS

1. Hawthorn. We're getting it all together now, and this is probably our best shot at the flag. No retirements and a couple of handy trades have made the team stronger, and we'll certainly learn the lessons from last year. Year of the Hawk ![]() 2. Collingwood. Still a powerhouse, despite what you think. Their midfield is still by far and away the strongest around. But the grand final loss and late-season slump will hurt them mentally, the round one match-up with the Hawks will be a critical one, so early in the season. 3. Carlton. Don't want to admit it because I hate the team, but they've got a serious case for the flag. Played very well last year and unlucky to miss out on top 4. So much quick ball movement in the Blues midfield. Don't think they can go all the way though. 4. Essendon. They're becoming a force again, and should be in a battle with Geelong for 4th spot provided players like Stanton, Ryder, Zaharakis and co. can fire. Watson has to not get himself injured too. If all this happens, they'll be the wild-card of the finals. 5. Geelong. No era can go on forever, and although they handled Ablett's loss very well, more retirements and aging bodies will surely tell in this season. Still have the quality to mix it up but you can't put it all on Selwood and Chapman anymore. 6. West Coast. An amazing year last year, but I highly doubt they can reach those heights this year. Still, all credit to Worsfold on an amazing turn-around, and with still so many old hands in the line up in good form they shouldn't be missing the 8 this year. 7. Fremantle. Provided they dont get killed with injuries again, of course, this side has still plenty of talent running around. Watch for Barlow's first proper year back from injury...I think he can recapture his form. 8. North Melbourne. Showed a lot last year with players like Swallow, Goldstein and Pedersen and are only going up. I'd like to say otherwise but the evidence points towards top 8 for North. Should hold off challenges from St. Kilda, Richmond and Sydney for that spot. 9. St. Kilda. It's done and dusted for the Saints. Unless Lenny Hayes can come back with a bang, and Goddard and Riewoldt re-discover themselves, I can't see them making the 8. Will give it a red hot crack because the club has resilience aplenty but they lack pace through the middle. 10. Richmond. Once again, will come really close and look the goods for the 8, but fade. As per usual. However, this could be the last year where this happens for the Tigers faithful; their youth showed signs of maturity last year and they should only go up. 11. Sydney. Really could finish in the 8 but travelling to Sydney just doesn't seem like much of a challenge anymore. Plus a side that really lacks creativity and relies on Goodes to carry them over the line all the time can't keep making the 8; this year will be a reality check for the Swans. 12. Adelaide. The team has an excellent culture and a season like last year's will be thoroughly adressed. Easily has the talent (beat Hawthorn and led Geelong, Collingwood and Essendon at 3 quarter time) but consistency is a monumental problem for the Crows. They'll start the rebuild this year. 13. Brisbane. Almost identical story to Adelaide. Huge talent, can really play if they're focused but ridiculously inconsistent. Shouldn't be anywhere near the spoon but a fair way off the 8 as well. Watch for Cornelius and Karnezis, they're really coming of age. 14. Western Bulldogs. Are a complete shambles now. Gianciracusa is trying his best in a team that really is running out of ideas. Interesting will be Brian Lake's return; I think he'll come back strongly, but it will be a solitary consolation for a disappointing season. 15. Gold Coast. They've had their introduction and they should be getting a grip on the competition. Their youth will start to really prosper in the latter half of the season, and a late run will see them start to show their ability. Still a long long way from the 8, though. 16. Port Adelaide. A disaster last year will take its toll on the Port players, but despite their thrashings there were games where they showed some real promise. Should be competitive down the bottom but will ultimately lack the finishing touch. 17. Melbourne. A team which has always been incredibly overrated in my opinion will flop for another year. The way Geelong ripped them to shreds last year (166 point CRUSHING) is an example of huge defensive deficiencies. Even Port Adelaide, in a year where the Power couldn't win to save their lives, beat them. A team that has had too many false dawns, and will need to rebuild yet again to see the 8. 18. GWS. If they finished any higher than 18th, I'd be very very surprised. Like the Suns will need to find their feet in the AFL this season, with the priority to blood more young players, despite their investments in experience. Expect Folau to play better than Hunt did in his first year.

Fremantle: It is almost impossible to predict what they will do. In 2011 they had no defensive game plan. This will change with Lyon, but it is not clear that they are capable of playing a defensive game. Still any team that has a spot for Zac Dawson has to be suspect. Adelaide: Without doubt one of the worst lists. They have no quality backs with the exceptions being Johncock and Rutten (injured). They have no elite inside midfielders and only one quality outside midfielder in Scott Thompson. The forward line is an absolute joke Tippet and Walker do not produce enough, need I say more? The only shining light is Dangerfield and he is heading to GWS next year. Still their new coach is supposed to be pretty good. North: Cannot make the finals without quality talls...it really is that simple. Western Bulldogs: DEPTH, DEPTH and more DEPTH. Turned over a lot of promising young players last year. Will need Jordan Roughead or Ayce Cordy to step up, but certainly still has a quality midfield with Boyd,Griffen,Cooney and Cross being supported by the youngsters Wallis, Libratore and Dalhaus. These three have quality written all over them. The key will be the back line which should see the return of Lake, Hargraves and Gilbee to better form. Forget about 2011, injury wrecked the club. The dogs will bounce back better for the experience of blooding numerous young players. Melbourne: They finally have a decent coach and the most certainly have some talent. Frawley, Maloney, Watts, Trengrove, and Jamar would walk into any team. Their season depends on players like Liam Jurrah, Mitch Clark, Jack Grimes, Joel Macdonald , Stefan Martin and Colin Sylvia maintaining consistency. At their best they are certainly capable of making the 8, but they do tend to fold quickly when things are going bad. Having said that, they probably had one of the worst game plans going around last year.

Do you remember that time the Lion's won 3 straight Premierships and then got to the Grand Final in 2004? Yes, I recall those memories fondly. Best AFL team of all time.

In for both ... will see if the guy from Sydney can outdo the locals (yes, I know I've been in Melbourne for a while now, but I did grow up in Sydney)!
Bring on the NAB Cup ... need to find me some good non-GWS rookies for this! |
