Default Chess could learn something from Hikaru No go

Hi,

I have been watching this great Japanese anime series (Hikaru no go) about a go player. Fun stuff, suitable for all ages and interesting to compare to the chess world.

I reminded of what Allan Jeans said when he was asked about the Rugby League State of Origin Game which was played at the MCG in front of 87,000 and much hoopla.
He said, "Love the sizzle, just a pity about the sausage".

Shocking!

Anyway I have found the organisation of the game very interesting.

I will give you some cliff notes so you don't have to watch all the 72 videos.

1- Go players sit an exam called "The pro exam"
2- Pro players are allowed to teach classes
3- Pro players play on a circuit
4- The Pro winner of certain tournaments get official titles named after the tournament.
5- Talented juniors sit an exam to become insie, where they are trained to become pro players, but this does not guarantee that they will become pro, as there is a strict quota on the pro intake every year.
6- Pro players do not have to go to school
7- Professionals are forbidden from playing in amateur tournaments
8- At 18 a junior is not allowed to be an insie anymore
9- After 30 you are forbidden from sitting the pro exam
10 Go salons are clubs where the average amateur player meets, they charge board fees to play.
11. The pros are ranked according to different Dan.
12. There is a GO institute that administers the game from a dedicated building.

hi fg7

I basically knew all your 1-12 many years ago.
In 1999, our Club was the place where the Australian GO Association turned to for a loan of 50 DGT clocks. The rental price was handy income for us for a few years as GO had their annual event sponsored by Mitsubishi (from memory). I got to know the organiser quite well and was always bemused by the huge prize-money on offer versus the need to 'borrow' clocks from a poor cousin.
At the end of all your points the fact remains >
"Love the sizzle, just a pity about the sausage".

GO is not the only game that has a deficient 'sausage'.
For example, there is no game with a better buildup and electric ritual than SUMO wrestling. But the actual push-and-shove does not rank with a Yates-Brereton collision, a Daicos goal, nor anyone's speccy.
Another example is Soccer with its world-game claim. But who could ever forgive the rule-makers that allowed a winger-in-possession, haring down the wing, to be tripped, the ball dumped deliberately out of bounds, and the offending side not penalised, even for distance.

Don't get me wrong, the sizzle is good to watch, but, if you have a good sausage you don't need to the concentrate on the sizzle.

Just remember, the Sermon on the Mount, is remarkable not for the sizzle.

regards
