I'm a total newb to chess and came on this site to learn some of the techniques about the game.

Default

Practising and playing people better skilled than you is the best technique I have found. I played a guy I used to work with (during work hours) for almost a year. At the start he would destroy me in under 10 moves, the last few games we played it was pretty much even.
