Default Daniel Han takes on world best

Hamilton Press has published a story and photo of Daniel Han, Hamilton chess club member, with his thoughts before he heads off to the Chess Olympiad - the 'world cup' of chess events. His opponents will need to prepare against d4 ;-). See article here. All the best to Daniel and all of the NZ mens and ladies teams.

Default More players than chess sets

At last night's club night, it was slightly embarrassing that we had more people wanting to play than sets available. OK, we have more sets but not enough were brought along - we really had quite a few new people turn up! This is a nice problem to have. We will have enough sets in future, but if this continues we will need to find a larger space for us. Any suggestions will be considered.

Default junior chess update

The HCC web site now has some long awaited updates for recent events involving Waikato school teams and individual players. See under events-> junior chess (or here).

I am thinking of holding a Hamilton Rookies Shield starting in the 2011 summer school holidays, available to anyone under 1700 rating, with prizes for adults and U18, U16, U14, U12, U10, U8 boys and girls, and encouragement awards. Basically a number of 7 round rapid events throughout the first 3 terms of the year, with individual event prizes and a grand prize for those over all events. But more of this later. Any feedback on this idea appreciated.

Raise the membership fees if there is not enough room for the existing chess players.

Default Non-membership scheme

We are introducing (from now!) a scheme for those out there that may want to come to the club on club nights, but cannot or do not, for whatever reason, become club full members. So to make it easier for you, the following will apply:
For non-members: please contribute a gold coin ($2 for adults, $1 for under 18s) when you visit us on club nights. We will arrange for a donation box to be available. Please check out here for those that may wish to become club members.

Default Launch of the Hamilton Chess Centre January 2011

Some exciting and welcome news!

We will be from the start of 2011 meeting at a new venue, for club nights and also for most of our other tournament requirements. The new venue is the Hamilton Chess Centre, now co-located with the premises used by The Hamilton Club, situated at 21 Grantham St, near the Waikato museum in the central city. We will be able to use one room exclusively for our club night needs, and there are other rooms available there when we stage larger events. The first of these will be a 2011 Rapid, on 16th January from 11am. We will still meet on Tuesdays, the first next year is 18th Jan.

The membership fees have also been restructured. The annual adult membership fee will not change - this is $50 for 12 month membership, but a range of options has also been introduced:
- 6 month memberships
- junior memberships
- payment plans can be arranged
- increased fees for non-members visits (first 2 visits for non-members are free)

Note that there is no requirement for you to become a member of The Hamilton Club, although we are working on reciprocal reduced fees for members of both groups.

If you are asking about trophies for the Hamilton Rookies Shield - probably cash prizes for now.

Default Chess..on the radio!

My chess widow and myself were interviewed on the Hamilton Community Radio yesterday. Stay tuned for a sound bite of the interview appearing on the HCC site. A lot was discussed - including chess!, and how to live with a chess nut, from a woman's perspective.

You are presumably familiar with Marcel Duchamp's first wife, who was so frustrated by her husband's passion for chess that she glued the chess pieces to the board. The couple later divorced.

Default the new venue is a hit!

We held our first club night at the Hamilton Chess Centre last night with a healthy number attending. Everyone enjoyed it, with many positive comments (very quiet, good setup, easy access).

Some said it was better than the Auckland Chess Centre, but as I have not been there, I cannot comment further.

Once we get tea and coffee organised, it should be even better.

Two regulars to our weekend events, but not yet club members, said they will join now! And welcome to our newest club member, Asheesh Gautam, a Fiji FIDE registered player with a FIDE rating in the 1800s, and an ex-Fiji Olympiad player. I am sure he will test the mettle of our players in future club events!

Thnaks for that factoid. My wife has now played 1 game (via facebook) with me and she sees and likes the combative nature of chess. She may not be a convert as yet, but who knows. I don't think we will end the same way the Duchamp's did.
