Default so what's on for 2011?

OK, so what is on for 2011? 01/19/2011

I have put together a draft club calendar for 2011, that includes serious (?) and fun stuff. The web version is under calendar and a pdf download is available under the links page. Each school term I am planning one serious sets of events (club rapid championship, club championship etc) that run over a number of club nights, as well as some weekend one day rookies/mixed rapid events.

There is probably room for a few more events (like the NZCF North Island rapid), but there needs to be some feedback from members etc about what they want as well, and a balance between chess and real life/having a life! Comments welcome ;-)

Default Club rapid championship starts, more members each week!

The club rapid championship started this week, and will be played over the next 8 weeks (7 rounds of chess, 1 round per night, but just casual chess next week). It is still not too late to enter - just turn up or contact me. Players can take up to 2 half point byes (up to round 5).

We also had many new members join this week - the club membership now stands at 23, with 5 juniors. A full list can be found on the about us tab. Welcome to our newest members Austin Sedgwick, Craig Scott, Callum Scott, David Chen, Samuel Eddy and Vai Wihongi. Good luck to all of you in the Rapid Championship.

Default Hamilton Chess club - new web site address. Please take note!

The Hamilton Chess Club web site has moved to a new web address: Hamilton Chess Club | Bringing chess to all ages in the Waikato!

Please update your records/favourites etc. If you already had us noted under hamiltonchess.wordpress.com then using that address will automatically redirect you to the new address. But the hamiltonchess.weebly.com address will not redirect you (there are links on that site to let people find us still to the new site).

Sorry for any inconvenience caused. The new site brings a more professional edge and provides a few more features that will assist me down the track.

The club has been famous for a day.. here are some sites that have run a story of interest, in some fashion or other:
ChessBase.com - Chess News - Female grandmaster wins Hamilton Rookies Shield!
Steve Giddins' BCM blog: Tournament raider
The Closet Grandmaster
Lara Stock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Father and daughter play (and win) rookies tournament under false names : ChessVibes

Default Club rapid championship drawing to a conclusion...

This 7-round 20+5 tournament has just 2 weeks to go (we are playing 1 round on each club night). After 5 rounds, Hilton Bennett is outright leader on 5 points and is looking unstoppable. See here for the current cross table and the provisional pairings for round 6.

Default We are on the move!

After a few (6?) months of occupation of the Hamilton Club by the Hamilton Chess Club, and after the 100 year history of the Hamilton Club, we have had verbal notice (so far) that we will have to move out of the Hamilton Club in September (yes, this year), due to the building being relocated (a little closer to the river).

I would expect the relocation and refurbishment to take about 2 years or so to complete, though this is just my guess of the time frame. The large upstairs space would be demolished, not moved (sad face).

For now, nothing has changed, and events such as the Hamilton Rapids and Rookies Shield will continue as normal, up to September. But we need to find a new premises soon.

I would be happy to field any suggestions for where we could move to, that we could afford, etc.

Perhaps you can try the public library and they may have an area where chess can be played.

Default A new home for the Hamilton chess club

After 6 months of occupation of the Hamilton Club by the Hamilton Chess Club, and after the 100 year history of the Hamilton Club building, we have had to move due to the building being relocated (a little closer to the river).

We will start up afresh at the Hamilton Girls High School, Hill St entrance, from 20 Sept. For a map and directions, see the about page. We appreciate the offers of help we received from other schools and groups. We will try to maintain our meeting times and the chess coaching sessions as usual, but there may be some disruption as we settle in.

And it looks like you guys are doing a fine job with the Club...

Apart from all other impressive Club activities which can be found in the Club's website,

Hamilton Chess Club

here is another one organised for tonight:

Simul versus a Brazilian IM

The club is organising for tonight that we can play a simul against the Brazilian IM Herman van Riemsdijk. (pictured)

Herman is visiting Hamilton for a few days and we are very pleased to have him here so that he can share his knowledge of chess and talk about his worldwide experiences.

Tonight it will be a timed simul (ie using clocks), to give us some certainty of a finish time and to allow a more level playing field for all. Entry fee for the simul is $12.

Herman has played against a range of present and past world champions and top flight chess players, and I am sure he will have a lot to share with us. So please come along on our opening club night from 7pm for some fun and entertainment.

PS I met IM Herman van Riemsdijk in Queenstown. He is a very nice gentleman and I am sure the Hamilton Chess Club members will enjoy his company and the depth of his knowledge in Chess!

Default Having a Brazilian!!

Thanks Jak for the promo and pic. Yes, Herman was a pleasure to host last night. 12 players took him on and the score line was 11-0-1 to Herman, one win coming from our newest member and a fellow dutchman, Peter Hulshof. We are getting people from all over the world coming to the Hamilton Chess Club.

That cow with dentures is so cool! If I had played the IM, the score would have been 11-1-1 (Maybe, assuming I would have won).

Hi SHump!

I was amazed by the hospitality and good organisation combined with that supreme touch of Kiwi good humour, exhibited by the New Zealanders during my recent visit to Queenstown.

I am sure Hamilton Chess Club is a prominent force in the above qualities of New Zealand Chess!

I have already made a promise to myself that next time I am in New Zealand to visit as many Chess Clubs as possible!

Hamilton Chess Club is on the top of the list!

Default 2012 events announced!

Well we are going to have a great time this year, with a raft of events on club nights and a number of weekend events. The table on the calendar page summarises the full year list of events, too numerous to mention here. But some things are worth a few words…

We start on club nights with a blitz tournament (21st Feb) followed by 3 nights of the Autumn Rapid. Then I am very excited about the start (on 27 Mar) of the club championship and reserves events. The club championship will be a 10 player 90/30 round robin that is FIDE and NZCF rated. The club reserves will be a 9 round 60/10 swiss event. More details to follow.

The first weekend event is the ever popular Rookies Shield is back again this year, 5 events spread through the year, with the first event on 4 Mar. This is for those new to chess, chess tournaments, and is limited to players under an NZCF rating of 1600. We hope to have separate girls only divisions this year, numbers allowing. So please register now to kick off a great Rookies season.
