Default Deviation of Rating Differences

Can any of you please explain what is "deviation of rating differences" all about. I see so many of you discussing about it so I have little doubt it is important and I want to know what it is so I can have a say on these things too (Although I might not do that at first, because it sounds very complicated you know, is it? I challenge you to try me

You probably mean rating differential, or RD. Basically a person's RD is a number that gets used in calculating their rating. Chess players are given rating which go up or down based on their performance in playing other rated players.

Thanks mate, it all makes perfect sense now. I guess deviance is a statistical term for calculating an even more accurate rating by going through lots of rated games. Just tell me if I'm wrong.
