Question School Chess Team

Were any of you part of a school chess team? If so how did you go? Unforuntely I was the guy who had heaps of mates on the team who just watched them play, I was pretty interested to see if they could win but I was a bit of a pain to them when they were playing too . If I had understood the concentration needed I would have been more courteous.

Well infact 2 years ago when I was in Western Australia my school chess team went to the nationals and I was board 4. (We got smashed by the way)
Then last year I went to the school nationals again with the Queensland team but unfortunately this time I was the reserve and didn't get to play. Although I played a heck of alot of table tennis and cards.
I'm pretty sure I'll be board 4 this year, (my last year of school), so hopefully they/we can win the states again!

I was the board #2 at KCI, the high school I went to for years 9-12. I switched to another high school for grade 13 (Cameran Heights), and was board #1 there. Ironically as board #1 at Cameran Heights I got to play the guy who had occupied first board at KCI while I had attended that school - he was in year 13 there as well. That game ended in a draw.

Nice credentials...
umm I'm assuming the board numbers represent the rank or position on your school's chess team?

That's the way its supposed to work.

For example board #1 is supposed the best and strongest player, board 2 is the 2nd best, and so on. Unfortunately, as in life, politics factors in and how much the teachers liked you also played a role.

Yeah unfortunatey teachers can tend to base their decisions on how much they like you. However I haven't had that problem since primary school.

Ok so then what's the point of ranking people? incentive?
Or is it just making sure there are no-mismatches?

I can answer that for you. The point of ranking is so that when you verse other schools your best plays the other schools best and worst plays the worst ect. Because it would simply be unfair if you put your best player against the others worst. It also is a sort of incentive. Sorry if what I just said makes absolutely no sense, lol it's late.

Yeah sometimes chess parents can get really, really over involved. This was the case in one of my primary schools and basically they thought they were the boss so they could decide who plays where and everything.

Ok I don't think I'm making much sense. I'm just going to go to bed now!!

Night

Thanks for explaining, brings back some thoughts... I think at my school there was only a 3 person team.

Sure it makes sense. The part that didn't make sense was when I was questioning the sensicality of what I was saying but are you questioning your ability to make sense about someone else not making sense making sense?

LOL

Oh ok interesting
