Default 2009 Yulgilbar-Think Big Australian Chess Grand Prix

Brian Jones asks on chesschat Chess Chat Forum - View Single Post - Canterbury Summer Swiss in Melbourne >>

Then why don't their (Melbourne) chess clubs and organisers enter their tournaments in the Australian Grand Prix like everybody else?

The Myer family supports chess in Australia but the organisers at the two biggest chess clubs in Melbourne (Box Hill and MCC) don't support the Australian Grand Prix by entering their events!

PS Entries for the 2009 Yulgilbar - Think Big Australian Grand Prix are still open!
I can't speak for MCC, but for CJCC and BHCC it is basically a cost issue driven by the accommodation expenses incurred for rental of premises.

For these two clubs each event has

rental costs
rating costs
prizes
arbiter costs
sundry costs

and when it is all added up it is considered that adding another cost in would give 'sticker shock' to potential entrants.

Happy to debate it Brian.

regards

I had a quick look at
Yulgilbar-Think Big Australian Chess Grand Prix
to see who had listed their tourneys for the 2009 Grand Prix.
From the list they all appear to be week-enders.

Neither BHCC nor CJCC have week-enders in their schedule for 2009 at this point in time. They might be allocated the VIC OPEN for 2009; but Chess Victoria have not made that decision yet.

Melb Metro has very few "weekenders" probably due to a lack of administrators willing to get involved. There is a very small number of people actually involved in running chess clubs in Vic and they are all very busy with the normal club schedules.
Croydon is probably bordering on what some people would call Metro but it will be interesting to see how well their two events entered in the Grand Prix are supported next year.
