Default The Chess Market

Does anybody know how many chess players there are, in Australia, and in the world, in absolute numbers or as a percentage of the population?

ie, Playing FIDE accredited tournaments and/or in chess clubs.

ie, Not including casual players, supporters and spectators.

Or better yet, and more specifically, how big is the online chess world?

Default Chess Numbers in Australia

Difficult question to answer. In terms of rated players (ie. players with an ACF Rating) there are several thousand. Not all of those players are active however. In terms of active player numbers (players who have played at least one rated game within the past 12 months), you're probably looking at about 750 overall in Australia. On top of that, in terms of players who regularly attend a club but don't play rated chess, I'd venture about 200 nation wide.

The Internet Chess Club is the biggest online chess club with thousands of members. If you log in as a guest, type the word "Who" and press enter. That will show you whoever is logged on at that particular moment in time. Free Internet Chess Server is about as big, maybe even bigger, than ICC. If you ask the admins there, they can tell you precise figures in terms membership numbers, etc.

Hope that helped.

Default Is under 1600 magic?

Is there any regulation that says an event must have an U1600 prize? If the organizer thinks U1500 is more applicable for his prospective field can he offer that?

I'm pretty sure that it is up to the tournament director or whoever to decide what rating categories will be awarded prizes. So I don't think there is a regulation and yes the organiser could if he felt it was more applicable.

In Siberia Grandmasters do not play for prizes, they play for glory and prestige! Much more powerful motivation!
