I have a dream ,
a dream that one day the Australian chess community will have a single forum. A dream where all chessplayers can stand proud , proud, with no fear nor favour , building a forum where all can speak freely , without condemnation for their freely held concerns and perspectives. A place where as one , we can strive together for a better and a brighter future. Instead of fighting between ourselves , we must fight, as an almighty phalanx , a phalanx against the forces that would see chess suppressed to a point far below its rightful place ,far below its rightful place at the right hand of the very god himself. I speak to all chess players and ask you to consider, the time to bury the hatchet . The AX calls on you all , My friends it is time , it is time to bury it, bury the hatchet, not into each other , but into the very schisms that divide our wondrous community . I remember well the very spirit that fuelled the great SCT , and the spirit , my dear friends was this , that each of us , no matter how inflated or blind the ego , is not and never can be greater than the game itself. It is nothing less than our duty, to not just the inherent dignity of each and every one of us ,but to the very essence of the universal cosmos ,in which we all play our role as a piece in the grand design. I have a dream ... |

Firstly, was it Arrogant-One who spammed Chess Chat? Secondly, was it unethical for Arrogant One to registered a very similair domain name. Let us begin with Q1 first. AO denies it was himself and even made an official admonment. Fair enough, I am content believe him on that point although Ido think it reasonable that if it was not him, he knew who it was. At any rate it seems to me to be the less important of the two questions because all forums get spammed, and generally spam is easy enough to detect and get rid of with a few clicks of an administrators keyboard. Next question on the ethics of registering a similiar domain name. I think this might in fact be illegal to register a similiar domain name to an already exisiting site name, so ethics aside AO would be well advised to jettison the new domain name on that basis. If I am wrong and it is not illegal, well, then AO has presumably acted lawfully. It would then have been prudent for the owner of Chess Chat to have registered such similiar names for himself at the same time as setting his site up. So if it was unlawful AO should suffer a beating for registering the domain. And if its not, then I have difficulty finding fault with his strategy because it would be lawful, and is in an insideous way cunning to direct traffic to his site when that traffic errantly adds the extra bit to Chess Chat's address. Certainly the Chess Chat dignitaries have clamoured for justice, as they see it, and attempted to denounce AO tactic but as I stated above I believe the test is ultimately lawfulness, and providing that it was lawful I think AO's plan in registering the new domain is strategically sound. How does any of this relate to a single chess forum for Australia? Well I suppose it highlights the current divisions within the chess community. There was, and arguably still is, only a single dominant board. AO may be in the minority in expressing dissatisfaction with the moderation and his alleged mistreatment on that board, but he is certainly not alone, and as a poster on both boards I see what goes on even if I don't always comment on it. I think for the time being while a single unified forum is the aspiration, that status quo of two boards is actually in the better interests of Australian chess.
