Default Kids and Juniors

Just after some general advice on starting kids out on chess

My girl is 6 and is just learning moves.

I was taught by my dad (at 6) - who had the good 'whatever' to point me to "Chess Made Easy" by Purdy on Koshnitsky ( he threw me the book and said "here start with this" (to his own dismay as I promptly thumped him three weeks later).

Anyway - what are the best tools for teaching kids today? Is Fritz and Chesster worth a try?

- J

Mods - happy for you to move this thread to the most appropriate place

Default Play,Play,Play

Hi Dr J

1. A Blitz clock
2. Take all your pieces off the board and only play with Pawns
3. 5 0 no takebacks
4. If child loses take 1 pawn of the board.
5. If child wins put a knight on the board.
6. Rinse and Repeat.

Thanks for the advice FG - worried about the handicap odd you suggest ! I might get beaten!

Does anyone know if "Chess Made Easy" has been updated (to modern notation) and is still available?

No Worries. You just need to find out the spot where your daughter can get 50% against you. Chess made easy has been updated and can be ordered from Brian Jones or Peter Parrs stores. Great book.

Thanks mischa, started with Fritz and Chesster that has kept her occupied now for >12 hours with a couple of 5 hour stints in there. Looks like a solid leaning tool and will try firegoats recommendation soon.

Will have a look for Leggo Chess as well.
