From Peter Parrs chess site
The following quick victory was by twice Australian Champion and former ACF President John Purdy who died last week aged 75. His sharp tactical style of play was similar to his grandfather’s Spencer Crakanthorp who also won 2 Australian Championships. John’s father IM Cecil Purdy was an excellent positional player,4 times Australian Champion and 1st World Correspondence Champion. John’s great grandfather Lawrence Spencer Crakanthorp (1857-1929) started it all and was world no 188 in the historical world rating list of 1902. Purdy,John - IM Steiner,Lajos J [A47] AUS ch 1954 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 b6 3.e3 Bb7 4.Bd3 e6 5.0–0 Be7 6.Nbd2 c5 7.b3 Nc6 8.a3 cxd4 9.exd4 Nd5 10.g3 Nc3 11.Qe1 Bf6 12.Nc4 Nxd4 13.Nxd4 Bxd4 14.Nd6+ Ke7 15.Nf5+ 1–0. Steiner was 4 times Australian champion. John was much liked and respected by the chess world and the legal profession. The memorial service for the Hon. John Spencer Purdy will be held at 2.30pm on Friday 9 September in the Camellia Chapel of the Macquarie Park Crematorium,Plassey Road,North Ryde. ---------------------------------------------------------- It is good to see balance in this family''s life. For four generations they have been serious chess players but also had family life to pass on their genetic and healthy chess upbringing. Now who comes to mind - one of our beloved mates - who stays up all night bothering us instead? |
