From Shaun Press' BLOG

A hard four days

Well done to all the participants of the FIDE Arbiters Seminar, held at the Box Hill Chess Club over the last 4 days. The seminar, the first ever held in Australia, was organised by the Oceania Chess Confederation (with help from the Box Hill Chess Club) and was sponsored by the Asian Chess Confederation.
I was one of the (paid) presenters, along with Gary Bekker and Charles Zworestine. The seminar was over 4 days and was pretty full on, with more than enough material to fill the 7 sessions. The seminar finished with a 3 hour exam, which had a pretty brutal pass mark of 80%. At this stage the exam papers are still to be marked, but as was pointed out (by me) at the end of the course, even if the participants don't all pass, they've still learned as much over 4 days as many arbiters would learn in 10 years.

Default The outcome of the 4-day seminar and exam.

The current issue (10/8/11) of the Box Hill Chess Club newsletter carries this notice from Gary Bekker

FIDE Arbiters seminar by Gary Bekker

From 5 to 8 August 2011 a FIDE Arbiters Seminar was organized in Melbourne, Australia by the Oceania Chess Confederation with the generous support of the Asian Chess Federation and under the auspices of FIDE. The venue was the Box Hill Chess Club and the seminar coincided with the Oceania Senior Chess Champion-ship being held there.

The lecturer was IA Gary Bekker (AUS), FIDE Lecturer and former Oceania Zone President. Assistant lecturers were IA Shaun Press (PNG), councillor on the Rules and Tournament Regulations Commission and Swiss Pairing Programs Commission, and IA Charles Zworestine (AUS). 9 people from Australia and Fiji participated in the Seminar and the examination test held after the lectures.

The following passed the exam and will be awarded a norm for the FIDE Arbiter title, after approval at the next FIDE Congress:

Kerry Stead (AUS) FIDE ID: 3202577
Jack Hughes (AUS) FIDE ID: 3214435
Peter Tsai (AUS) FIDE ID: 3214672
Roger Croft (AUS) FIDE ID: 3212157
Oliver Lemmel (AUS) FIDE ID: 3206580

Many thanks to all those who participated.

My congratulations to all these who have reached a significant step towards becoming an IA.
