Question Did TORNELO make TORNADO in Ballarat and Australian Chess?

We would like to hear your opinion about TORNELO!
Contestants, arbiters and creators, please provide us more information!
We would like to see negative, positive sides and what could be done to improve the software.

I would recommend using what they use at the Box Hill Chess Club, so we can transfer the games above the Shoutbox.

Please advise how to export the figures in the pairings results into a spreadsheet and into a word processor.

Default Tornelo

Some truths about the system:

•As I expected from the beginning, players of a certain age who do not have internet access, or those who aren't interested for electronic developments had and still have no idea what the fuss is all about.

•On the other hand, I am sure ALL juniors who participated in the tournement loved the new development and you could see them gathering around the screen(s) of the venue and their own laptops following the proceedings with interest.

•From the people I asked (this is not a thorough survey) the general opinion varies from very good to indifferent.

•You don't expect a person who hasn't seen a digital screen or even have problems to use their mobile phones digital interface to be able to operate this system.

•As I stated in a previous note it's really negative to transfer personal likings or dislikings into this! Let's have a proper discussion based upon facts and personal experience on the system.

•I believe:

•Technology, its improvements and refinements is here to stay. Tornelo and other related systems is here to stay.

•After Begonia, we have two major tournaments (Doeberl and Gold Coast) declaring they will use the system.

•So, let's wait and see how it will work there.

•Personally, and after a tuition by the juniors, (organisers were also readily available for advice) I understood how the system works and I will be using it next time.

•The reason why I did not use it in Begonia was that most of my games were played in the darker side of the venue (please do something about this - the only problem in an otherwise excellent organisation) and combined with my rather poor eyesight would make the opetations on my NOKIA rather hard to achieve.

•However, as J2G states in a previous note, the real testers of the new system (in Victoria at least) will be the Clubs. The administrators will have more time to explain things and the players more time to adjust.

It was good on this end.

Slight annoyances were:

having to constantly refresh

the fact that someone will upload half a game, but you're not necessarily guaranteed they'll have time to keep updating it!

anyway- I think it's a nice idea to be developed. better than needing to pay thousands upon thousands for DGT boards.

Certainly, TORNELO is a good innovation, however there are several factors which we have to overlook:

1. Does everyone have their iphone(smart phone) fully charged? Of course if you need to perfect live games.

2. Recording moves on a mobile phone could be a problem because the size of the screen and precision (delays on the correction of the moves).

I think the Ipad or a tablet PC are the way to go. They could also become cheaper within the year.

1. Highlight the pairings on TORNELO - press copy
2. Open Notepad on your PC and paste
3. Align numbers, ratings, results etc.( it takes only couple of minutes)

To post on the ozchess forum:

1. Highlight all in the Notepad and press copy
2. Open up ozchess forum and Quote/Post reply area - and paste all from Notepad
3 Sellect all at ozchessforum post and press "#Wrap code" on the top of the screen
4. Submit your post on the bottom of the page

I enjoyed using it (even if it was for only 1 game). Can I suggest turning it into an app rather than having to use a web browser for input? That way if the user doesn't have internet access they can upload it at a later date without having to refer to the scoresheet, rather they just open the file or whatever and upload it.

2011 Gold Coast Chess Festival is going to repeat the score system:
3 points for a win
1 point for a draw
0 point for a loss

I am not sure if it will be easy to create these types of scores in TORNELO, of course the tournament starts on the 26 December 2011.

That's a wonderful idea. This should lead to less draws and more competitive games.

Default illegal use of electronic devises

Amir as a budding FIDE arbiter have you considered the fact that the use of electronic devises of any kind is simply prohibited?

Monroi has been veryfied by FIDE and I don't see why the TORNELO can't be approved?

Kings of chess is going to secure their own Ipad's and Iphones
for live games transmission.
On these Ipads there will be no other chess
application's installed but TORNELO!
This will prevent players to use own smart phones which already installed chess software etc.

Tornelo is not an app. To access it from a iPad, iPod ar iPhone you need access to a standard browser and the internet.
Only way you could consider it safe would be if it could be locked to a wireless connection in the room which was locked down to the Tornelo site only.
Easy to lock down the site but no way to stop the player connecting to another wireless connection (ie the smart phone in their pocket) and using that to access whatever they want.
