What's A Good Gift For A Chess Player?

What are your favorite chess-related gifts? What gifts do you recommend for someone who has been playing chess for a few years?

Try a book Merdecat. If the person has been playing for a few years, you'd probably want something a bit advanced or at least inter-mediate. Maybe 'Chess Tactics for Advanced Players' - I think thats' what its called.

Your other option is to get them some chess software. I'd recommend Shredder. Type 'Shredder Chess' into Google and you'll dig it up no problem.

What you don't want to get them is a marble chess set. I got one once as a gift and its useless except as a display.

LOL!

Thanks for all the ideas.

Why is a marble set useless exactly?

I was wondering about that, too.

Is it because the pieces are kind of heavy and not very satisfying to the touch?

A subscription to the Australian Chess magazine is a gift that gives itself 6 times in 2008. Hard to beat that.

Or for the person who has good internet access, perhaps a 12-month subscription to www.chesslecture.com ?

I'd probably consider giving some of the more current publications/videos, but a bit more "generic". Some suggestions: Kramnik's newly released DVD (I think it's titled Rise to the Top), Waitzkin's Art of Learning, Kasparov's How Life Immitates Chess.

I wouldn't want to give something that's too repertoire specific (like an opening book) or level specific (e.g. Advanced whatever), unless I know the person really well, as there's a risk that they might not find what you give useful.

I wouldn't want a marble chess set - they're only good for display, as another poster said.
