Default Introducing balance. Introduce the money and the elite will follow?

From Brian Jones

Over the years we have had quite a few players (eg Zhao, Lane, Curtis, Lovejoy) living more than 50km outside Sydney. Why should any of them be disadvantaged by not being given the opportunity to become State Champion?

To do otherwise (and by not attracting the best players eg GMs and IMs) has just lowered the prestige of the State Championship title.

With apologies to many-time title winner Greg Canfell, he has never been the best player in NSW!

I prefer the format used for Australian Masters and/or Victorian Masters.
10 or 12 player FIDE-rated round robin held over one week. Possibly two rounds a day, possible alongside the NSW Open or similar.

Top active players in NSW are: Zhao, Xie, Kanikevich, Lane, Bjelobrk, Feldman, Rej, Illingworth, Smirnov, Tan, Canfell and Scott.

I am sure that many of these would want to play if the rewards were high!

It is up to our administrators to find the money rather than run a second-rate event!
I have pasted the quote here as it seemed to be a counter-point to the line I have been running in this thread.

What makes it attractive to strong players

1) Chance to play other strong players
2) Potential IM norm event
3) Weeknight game meaning that weekends dont have to be sacrificed.
4) A chance to improve your ELO rating (which is alot harder in open events in Aus as there are a lot of people with extremely low ratings and the top players have to almost win every game to maintain their rating!)

I know most of the participants and was able to chase them up reasonably quickly.
*Bolding is mine.

Default Not for the faint-hearted nor the superficial.

Round 8 of the current Box Hill Championship presents a good time to produce the metric on the competitiveness of pairings. This is late in the tournament and the SWISS pairings system could be expected to be representing small absoute differences between ratings of paired competitors.
For 28 boards the mean absolute deviation is 332. Surprisingly high.

Does this mean that if the top board is 2200, that the lowest rated player would be 1868? That might sound like a dumb question, sorry.

The board 1 in question for the previous round was
1 Cheng, Bobby 1977 [4.5] 0:1 Saw, Geoffrey 2289 [5.5]

The absolute difference for that board is 2289-1977= 312.

If you sum all the differences for round 7, and then average, then this is what is called the mean absolute deviation (see your highlighter pen marking, and notice you missed highlighting one word).

For round 8 the board 1 game is
1 Saw, Geoffrey 2289 [6.5] : Liston, Howard 1792 [5.5]

The absolute deviation for this one is 2289-1792=497

What is the liklihood that George Xie and Mark Chapman will finish 1-2?

Default Good question though.

One of those occasions where a question very easy to phrase and understand, but the calculation of the answer would be testing.
