You are right!!

What improved my game the most was when i purchased "Masters of the Chessboard" by Richard Reti. Playing online and tournaments, casual games, and playing against computer have all contributed to my chess improvement. Oh, and I have studied many books on all stages of the game, including playing over master games. Too many to name.

You know they actually named an opening after that guy? They call it "The Reti". Its apparently very passive and doesn't give much of an advantage to black.

I've heard of the Reti Opening but I don't know much about it. Doesnt it start with 1.c4?

1. c4 is theoretically the English Opening, but can also lead to a Reti. 1. Nf3 can lead to a Reti or an English (or quite a few other things) and 1. g3 can lead to both an English or a Reti (or other things too)...

For me it was installing a chess game on my blackberry phone. I found that I always have my phone on me and when I was waiting for something I can play a move or two at a time. This allowed me to play a game or two per day just in my spare time. Playing a game or two per day got me to the point where I was no longer making stupid mistakes and that was a huge improvement.

Frankly, practicing more has probably been the strongest tool for me in getting better at the game. Strategies and analysis only go so far- at the end of the day it is about what you do and what your opponent does. Playing against humans is always different than playing against a computer or reading a book about strategy. Just my 2 cents...

Never knew how much of a thing chess was till I joined this forum. For me it would just be playing with other people that are better than me. Forces my mind to figure out patterns and tactics of other players. Plus, I don't have time to play and read books.

I opened with 1 Nf3 recently, black responded ... f5, so I (mentally) shrugged and we played a Dutch. The first time I've ever played a queen's pawn opening in a serious game.

I was inclined to play a KIA, and 1 Nf3 is one (of many) way into one.

The Dutch Leningrad can be lethal to white. I know, I used to employ it against my victims. Times back then were ..... less civilized. In any event, just a warning to the wise, avoid the Dutch. Brazil doesn't have that luxury - you do!
