Ah. But as he was short on time, the tiger spirit in me would say, I don't mind being down material - I will play to win on time!

I did consider that and depending on the time control and what the other guy had left on his clock then even losing the queen might be irrelevant but if there's any sort of increment it is a crushing position. Either way I think the knight would had to have been Amir's weapon of choice from that position, I see no other 'draw'.

Yes,
from the part that his time simply ran down to 50 sec after the "shocking" move
Nc1+

I'm sure that white is in the position to spend more time than black.
By loosing his queen he would not survive even 10 seconds on the board.

It's not about the winning answer.
It's about the fight to survive on the chess board.
The game was a blitz game and I worked hard to prepare for the assault against the king at any price.
I was happy with the draw considering that I was the organiser, arbiter and player otherwise I would go for a win in 60 sec.

As FG7 stated:

Nb3 Qc4 Nc1 he needs a double check:

..it worried my opponent and deplenished his time on the clock.

.anyway it's about fun in chess...

Am I missing something here I thought you said before the move was Nc1+?

Also how does white not manage to win this on time after a pretty simple Qd5

Hehe, Amir is playing for fun in the position Jaydon. Nc1 looks best, but Qc4 ensures the draw with ease, if Qd5 then Nc1-Nb3-Nc1

Oleg Kitikov, who played as white is a good friend of mine and a fair player.

We both understood that Nc1 is a good reason for a draw. I repeated the moves Nc1+/Nb3+ without trying to activate the Queen. I tried to force him to take the Knight on c1 with the rook, than my Queen would play the role.

He was willing to repeat the moves Ka1/Ka2, so a draw was agreed.

If Oleg would take the rook I would have 20 sec + his time to play.
Don't forget that he would be the ONE who must defend against the flying Queen.

Yeah I couldn't see white lasting long in that position, those light squares look like death

Oleg is a nice chap. Does he still attend the Brisbane Chess Club, or am I thinking about a different Oleg?
