Default Torneo de la legislatura!

My first tournie overseas and after an unforgivable draw in round 1 I show up tonight and some guy gives me the bird. What an insult. My play isn't all accurate but I knew that at the board: my only thought process on 9. Ng4 was in honour of the great Elie Beranjia, "you wanna beat snake, you gotta play like snake". It turned out to be a terrible move and pretty much a winning move too intimidation is key!

I liked 9...Ng4! It had style, it had swing, it had a little something!

What has surprised me greatly playing overseas is how under-rated Australian players are. This club has 500 members plus many who play as non-members, in any given tournament there is a huge group of players rated around 1900-2020 but who in Australia could realistically be rated anywhere between 1500-1800.

I've been accused of playing under my 'real' rating at 1708 FIDE to win prize money (which I did- scored 5/7 in a rapid with about 30 "2000" players).

Comparing these players to Kolak, Urban, Lekkas, Beaumont etc.. I think in a 10 game match they'd lose 8-2 or greater. The guy who played white in the above game for example was rated around 1820, and when I look at 7.e3 I want to puke my brains out and die (which is probably how Michael Baron feels when he looks at 9. Ng4 )

Anyway. Food for thought!

Hi Paul,

Look at 16.Bf3, 19.f5 and 24.Bd3, they all seem interesting choices.

Goat, thanks for the suggestions. I looked at 16. Bf3 but decided Rxh4, Qxh4, Rh1, Queen moves, Qxh7+ wasn't good enough (in a few lines- white can also double rooks on the h-file with the same idea). Also thought it blocks the third rank for my Queen to swing to g or h.

19. f5 is interesting. highlights 2 questions: 1) is black's rook better/worse on e7 or e6? (2) I guess I can forget about attacking h7.

Bd3 is obvious yeah.

For me the big question is on move 10. Should I play Nd4 and give up the light squared bishop, or was my offer of the h-pawn better?

Frank- those are some nice lines!!

Bxd4, f5!!!!!!!!!!! very nice.

Yeah Qd5 was clearly the way forward. It was about identifying weak squares around the king and also clearing a path to g and h for my queen. He defended h and g reasonably but Qd5 just puts a huge spanner in the works.

Anyway, Friday I'm black V this punk:

would like to generate some discussion of the rank plan pablito highlights above against the fianchettoed B on g7 (via Qc1,Bh6) etc...

I encounter this a lot and seriously wonder on its merits as it seems to lose time IMHO

Would love to hear some general debate on the point (pros & cons)
