White does not have time to benefit from weak dark squares around the black king.

If he had not castled and had a rook on h1,
If the centre was fixed and he didn't have to spend time babysitting pawns,
if he'd played h4,

then it might've been an ok plan. In this case all it did was give black a few free moves.

I wrote a post on it here:
Just another chess blog: Search results for Karpov Korchnoi

For example:

By the way Frank, no that wasn't Carlos. This guy was unrated- I missed the Carlos game by accident.

Tomorrow I have King Konig
19 Cavezza Paul 1708 2˝ 2 Konig Cesar 1980

Who plays my two least favourite openings! Dragon & French!

Hmmmmmmmm. Seemed like white got kind of flogged. Up to a point you had a good position but I think you tried too hard on the attack and when it evaporated your remaining position was left in ruins.

I guess my advice is to stay chipper and to kick butt next round!

PS. thanks for the lines Frank- I had a quick look through Fischer games he often plays an early h4 but I thought it was to stop g5 or something- with the Queen on c7 it didn't seem necessary. As for the rest, i'll take a closer look tomorrow!

tonight's effort was a little better:

My next opponent....

Kasparov, Garry vs. Heinecke, Víctor

2040 rated Heinecke... With black I can choose between the Lopez exchange or the closed Sicilian... two awful choices :S

Tournament over! 4.5 / 8 plus one forfeit, played average, went down in the 3 testing games against the petroff, KIA v french and closed sicilian, crushed the rest who pretty much deserved to be crushed!

(Qa1 clearly bollocks in that one but I was down to increments by then and basically lost.)
(Bd7 also an eyesore)
(g4 also clearly the start of a rancid plan..)
(a5 may also have been unnecessary)
