1. e4 e5 , 2. Nf3 d5, 3. exd5 ? It has gained a lot of popularity in the early stages of club tournaments. I tried it several times but could not build on the middle game.

I have played this opening in a fixed openings tournament. It is tricky as a barrel load of monkeys. White can keep the advantage but I am not going to tell you how as I may want to use it in allegro.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 the best reply for white is 3.Nxe5

Agreed! But what is the follow up for white after the Nxf7 sac?

Well maybe officially its a different opening with a different ECO code, but for the most part the ideas and a lot of the moves are the same.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5, White's strongest answer to the Elephant Gambit is 3.ed5 Bd6 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.d4 0-0 6.Ne5, and White is up a solid pawn for nothing. Black only obtains compensation for the sacrificed pawn in the Elephant Gambit when White does not play the best moves.
