The below is from the Chess Apprentice.
____________________________________ I think the Australian government should recognise chess as a sport, even if they classify it as a mind sport. If this occurred Chess would have to receive government funding like other sports. The question is how do we get the federal government to recognise chess?! The UK example should be extremely helpful, where they successfully lobbied the government to acknowledge chess as a sport. They used petitions, members of parliament, the media, the chess community, etc to win government support. The same can happen in Australia!!! __________________________________ Maybe part of the problem is that the government has very little confidence in the abilities of some chess administrators? Also, a lack of general support from the overall community. And then there is the fact that no one really thinks chess is a real sport like rugby of AFL.
