Default invisible

I can't really see the point of going to a forum and using the invisible function. Most forums don't allow that function, or allow it only if you pay a subscribers fee. Unless its a forum you'd be ashamed of going to, ie. adult content forum, it gives little to no advantage using the function.

That being the case, if a forum allows use of it I think that users are entitled to the full benefit of it and shouildn't have their use of it revealed by posters who can see them. Just personal opinion as I sometimes use the function here as well - for the fun of it.

For some reason I can't upload a pic from my computer to add to a post. When I go to manage attachments and try to upload it, I get a message saying that I exceeded my quota by the same amount as the size of the pic I'm trying to upload. Why is this happening?

WE
If you send a copy of the file to Box Hill mail box (boxhillchess@bigpool.com) (with the obvious change to the address to pond ) then we can experiment at the Club today. There may be a few techo's at the Rookies tourney.

Thanks MOZ. I've experimented with trying different pics of various sizes and none of them work. Same error message saying I've exceeded my quota by the size of the pic. Has anyone ever posted a pic on this forum? I don't recall one being posted. Is it possible that the settings prohibit attachments at the moment for everyone? Also, do you know the limit on the size of attachments?

I have just tried exactly the same thing on Chess Chat and it worked fine. So I'm guessing it's something to do with the settings here. You can see what I was going to post in the 'Alleged deletion....' thread.

I can't recall a pic, apart from the avatars.
Your questions about settings and attachments are good. Alex or Gendo may visit in the next few days. I notice you have successfully posted on .........
Bill is registered here and I notice that he has been commenting on what is within the software.

We really must solve this upload problem eventually so you can post your pic of 20 angels.

Hi Mr Elephant, if you can't upload photos directly, you may be able to link to them using bulletin board image codes.

You will need a place to host the original picture, photobucket (among others) offers a free hosting service that you can link to.

Its probable that this has something to do with the default settings WE. I will talk to the VB Support team about having it changed, hopefully within the next couple days. I think I know how to do it myself, but there are associated questions I have for them which need to be answered before I can make the change.

AO

ps- Thanks for bringing that to my attention

As I understand it, I believe that one drawback of allowing users to upload pictures directly to the site would be one of bandwidth usage. That is, every time someone views a pic uploaded to the site, they are effectively downloading that picture to their computer.

The benefit of linking to external sites (such as photobucket) is that the direct bandwidth usage is attributed to those sites, rather than this forum.

Most websites have a monthly bandwidth limit (depending on how much they pay for hosting). If they exceed that limit in one month, the site owners either have to pay more, or the site is blocked to the users until the start of the next month. I am not sure what bandwidth usage limits might be in place here, however they may be minimized by disallowing users to directly upload pictures to the site.

Spikey Neville should be able to confirm if what I say is accurate, or if I am barking up the wrong tree.

In any case, I am more than happy to provide a step by step tutorial for users here, showing them how to use an external image hosting site, and simply link the images to here via the bulletin board image codes.

10 Gigabytes per month.

I just checked and currently we are using just over one per month, leaving the remaining 9 untouched.

I just made some changes to the settings, maybe now pictures can be uploaded (hopefully). Please give it a go again and let me know.

Thanks,

AO

Hey, why not, I did!

Be careful that you download it to your own machine, and upload it to your own image hosting site though. Simply linking to someone else's image code can bring about unexpected results if they change what you are linking to!

Very good Little Black cat.

You know matey, I have got the feeling I missed reading a thread or something.
I see this lbc poster, and another called lunatic_barnyard_chook, and another called Little Black Cat.
All lbc initials.
Did I miss an explanation?

Anyhow, keep up with the techo. advice, it is appreciated.
