Quick comment for AO - I think it's great that you are welcoming new members in the Shout Box but I was wondering how you obtain the information regarding where they are from. If the members have personally notified you of their country/place of origin then that is fine but if you are obtaining that information by checking IP addresses then I don't think that it is appropriate to do so.
Just a thought.

I have been presuming that it is a trace from the sign-on e-mail address; and I agree with you WE that 'outing' of this type should only occur if preceded by a PM asking for permission to reveal.

I would not know how the 10 digit (or so) IP address would reveal the poster's likely real-life name.

Can you elucidate.

Btw...ROOKIES tomorrow.

Hi MOZ,

Haven't seen AO refer to anyone's real-life name, only to place of origin.

I thought the Admin had some way of determining where a poster was from and it had to do with the same power used to check IP addresses.

Can't stay for the entire Rookies Cup tomorrow but will drop in towards the end.

Whatever you can manage will be welcome.

That's a very good point WE. Indeed, I hadn't thought about it breaching their right to privacy, and have even received complaints via PM from some members who wanted the shout to be made but who had been overlooked

In light of your post I think I will desist from the practise unless formally requested by members in the future. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Try the Feedback thread Also, try the new flag Hack - User CP - Edit Profile - Scroll to bottom, select your country.

In relation to the archives for the shoutbox, its on the agenda. CC uses vbshout 2.0 for its archive and this has some associated security issues because it can be hacked. I know someone who claims to have done so, and heard many other VBulletin owners complain that their site was hacked after installing vb shout 2.0, so I won't risk it here.

As such we will have to buy the Inferno Pro Shoutbox in order to have an archive, and it will have other features as well. The only reason we have held off so far is that the rumour mill has said that a new updated version of Inferno Pro will be out this month. But if its not out soon, we will act to purchase and install the current version.

Also, a New Posts button should be added next week, and the best news yet, we may be able to find a VBulletin compatible pgn chess viewer - better, or at the very least equal to, the one found on CC - probably better though as we are trying to add a computer analysis function.

AO

Note: Site Stuff Thread merged with feedback thread (successfully).

AO

Your suggestion to manage the quick-draw time-out problem by checking the box REMEMBER ME has worked a treat. Thanks for the quick response and the solution.

Default ban! :)

You have been banned for the following reason:
No reason was specified.

Date the ban will be lifted: Never

That's the response I get when I try to post in the Box Hill thread! lol
I tried from another computer this time, it doesn't seem to work either!
Anyway, this looks like a more HK friendly thread

Thanks for your kind words Trevor all I wanted to say is that after last night's game I realised why juniors have a happy grin on their faces when they are playing against me!
I go home now to plan my great anti-junior strategy so I can extract my revenge! Juniors of the chess world beware and don't tell me you weren't warned!
Cheers and good luck to all!

HK, hello. I do not know who you are, but if you are with MOZ then you must be doing something right.

Yes you are fully welcome here. Your banning story needs publishing. I am wondering, would you mind if I were to move your post to the thread for such matters? It is your choice because we try to accommodate members preferences here.

Hi Iconoclast, I am Elliott (Tasso) Renzies from Melbourne, member of both MCC and BHCC) ACF 1452, also member of both CC forum and (recently) OZCF and I am proud to include Trevor Stanning amongst my very special chess friends.
Please do whatever you see fit with the "banning" post. The reason why I posted here is because I wanted to see if other threads were more accessible.
Cheers and good luck!

Hi Heavy

I checked the system and it did say you were awaiting email verification, but the banning is a real mystery as only a spammer named 'bestseller' is in the banned user group category. I replaced you in the registered users usergroup just to be sure, and saved that setting. Are you sure you weren't autologged out? I have just reviewed the autolog out time setting and increased it from 30 minutes to 90 to prevent this from occurring to members. Also, its perplexing because if you were banned you shouldn't have access to post in any thread. If this happens again, please let us know. Thanks,

AO

Both are excellent examples that should not be discounted.
What a shame that the person that decided to post it here for whatever reason lacked the same courage and clearness of mind. I have used the edit option on that post, as it disappoints me greatly that someone would create a username using my name, coincidentally my username at the other place, to perhaps mislead people that read this board that I had posted it myself.
Most people know of the other place and are able to access it to read for themselves, just as we can access and read here. What purpose does it serve to behave in this manner. If the person who did it had any courage, they would have posted under their username and just quoted my post.
Perhaps it would be an interesting exercise to investigate the ISP used to post the original! May reveal more than we like about the person behind this cowardly act.
If the moderators would care to confirm that this account is actually the only account that I, Phil Bourke, have registered here, it would be appreciated by me. Also a token observation, but allowing the use of full names of known living people without confirming that they are indeed that person is a bit of sloppy administration.

Good point Phil. Now lets examine your complaint. I will presume you are acting in good faith, for the sake of analysis.

Fact 1. SOMEBODY posted under your name on a different board.

FACT 2. We don't know yet who that somebody is.

Fact 3. This example is almost the same as Phil707's complaint on Chesschat.

Fact 4. There has already been moral outrage directed towards Ozchess about this incident on Chesschat.

Question? Is it morally and ethically consistent for people on Chesschat to attack Phil707 and defend your disappointment with a post here Phil?

I think not.

You may be right, but this incident is still independently interesting. The person responsible may have been conducting an intellectual challenge. I hope that if they apologise you won't think to bad of them.

I don't agree with this statement. I don't think the administrators have done anything wrong. They took the registration in good faith. But I do hope they resolve the conflicting situation in a way that satisfies you.

cheers Fg7
