hi guys,
I am currently looking for some good chess opening database which I could upload to my ChessBase program for analysis. Do you have any experience in this? I was searching through out the web and found many interesting ones, but also expensive. Any luck? So far my candidates are Mega Database from chessbase (but it's quite expensive) and openingmaster from Opening Master World largest chess database which goes with yearly membership plan. thanks for the hint, I need something not the biggest but rather a quality one. Opening master in my opnion is the best although the databases from Chessbase and Chess Assistant are very good.
However whatever you choose I would carry out my own downloads from ICCF and IECG at least once a month. |

Hi,
The best has to be Mega Database from ChessBase, I have it and it has annotations as well as the game. Combined with ChessBase9 or 10 it is very good. Apart from that you can download TWIC (The Week In Chess) for free, it has every top game for the week and I download it every week and add it to my Mega Database. Hope this helps |

The Chess Assistant database also updates with the week in chess and with less hassle than the Chessbase database. (I have both so I am correct on this point.) Opening master replaces the whole database once a month. This includes all of the week in Chess plus a great number of other games.) For example the Opening Master has far more recent Australian games than the Chessbase database. As you point out the Chessbase databases include a number of annotated games. Chess master does not. Chessbase also includes games with no moves (So as to give complete records of tournaments) wheras Opening Master has no blank games. None of the databases is as good as I would like for correspondence chess games. If you use Chessbase databases you have to update your games from ICCF and IECG manually. The same goes for the Chess Assistant database. Chess Master adds an up to date file of ICCF games but only six monthly. This is not helped by the fact that ICCF have two files. One of games up to the start of a year and a second of games played during a year which is built as games are completed. The solution is easy. Set up a database of correspondence games to the end of a year and a database of correspondence games for the year which you then replace as often as you feel is reasonable. I still feel that you are not going to go far wrong with any of the databases. |
