Default MCC Openings Group

The success of the endgame group has inspired me to try something new. Starting on Wednesday 27th October at 7.30pm and then running every second week, an Openings Group will be meeting at MCC. Come and talk about general principles, specific theoretical lines, repertoires, transitional and transpositional ideas and much much more.

This group is free to MCC members and $5 to non members, essentially the price of a visitors fee to the club

Great!! An idea might be to designate a system every couple of weeks so we can study up/bring in games and maybe even have a bash at a fixed opening or two. Pretty sure I can compete with you lot if I know the line a week in advance

Thematic opening nights are certainly something we will look at, but there are other issues that can be looked at. Like the endgame night, I will be looking at linking theory with practice.

I'm not 100% sure on the types of things we'll be looking at. Will we be looking at specific systems, or broad openings like the sicilian?

We'll be looking at anything and everything opening related. It's a massive subject, so each week there is plenty to choose from. There are a lot of different questions pertaining to openings, eg:

Theoretical debates
Repertoire ideas
Systemics
Memory vs understanding.
Safe vs critical.
Types of centre.
Gambits
Defences vs counterattacks

etc, etc

Ah nice. You've thought about this a lot more than I have. Theoretical debates should be fun lol.

Actually while we're on the topic of openings, do you still have that semi-slav game where white sacrificed a piece that you showed me around the start of the year? Think it was in the moran system or something?

I have a huge database of games, but I don't remember the game you're talking about. I'll go check some games and see what I can find for you

I think it was Bxc4. might have been Nxc4 though.

Kramnik-Anand match? They were mostly Meran's.

I don't think so. I think Gelfand might have been the black side. it was something like Bxc4 bxc4 Nxc4 and we were trying to work out if white had enough compensation.
