A 'Broken' mate works just the same as normal, 'Unbroken' mate. A few observations on this one:

- The 'star' move is white's second move after black's best defence, putting black into zugzwang.

- It is a fortunate thing that white king stands on the a8- corner square on his otherwise empty row.

- The position itself is not achievable in a normal game of chess. Count of the promoted pieces and remaining pawns exceed 8.

Its just a chess position like any other (the one in posts 1 and 2 above). White has to move, and find a mate in 3 moves or less. If Black plays well enough to survive past the 3rd move, Black wins.

You are white. What's your winning line here?

Could Broken please tell me which pieces aren't needed, for exaMPLE THE MATE WOULD STILL occur if these pieces weren't on the board. That way I don't chase down false leads.

Some pieces can't be removed individually due to the possibility of plural solution.

Ex: if Nb2 is removed, then 1.Rg2 will checkmate black easily.

Well, those pieces are the harmony of attacking and self blocking composition.
So we can only remove the attacking pieces, not self blocking pieces.

Ok here is the 1st murky hint : U should beat 1...Be2

I need a hint as now I don't think Qac8 is the winning move at all

Ok, here is the another hint, but it is still a murky one. Hint : if u were in the correct winning lines, the black's best defence is 1...Be2 then 2...Kg2
