Does this puzzle end with the knight going to g1 exposing a checkmate?

For Calvin: In some lines it does. Also Ne1# might do.
For AO: Consider my observation that 'wK being on a8 square on otherwise empty rank is fortunate' as a hint.

1. Bf4 Bg2
2. Qb1+ Bf1
3. Rh2 checkmate

So clearly Black must play 1...Be2 and not Bg2. This also means its likely that Bg3 or Bf4 are the first move for white in this line. Is that correct?

1...Bg2? is a bad defence against most white moves, as 2.Qb1+ is strong.
If you think 1.Bg3 or 1.Bf4 to be the key, then you really have to find something against black's plan 1...Be2 and 2...Kg2. (I'm not saying there is one)

BTW note the role of white pawns d4 and g5. Should one of them be missing, then 1.Bg3 Be2 2.Ng5+ (or Nd4+) Kg1 3.Nh3#( or Nxe2 ) would solve.

Hmmm, I'm sorry calvin, it's mate in 3 puzzle. Don't give up, keep trying, and notice Mr. Mip's hints.

Bravo... Welldone Matheson.

Below are complete answers

1.Rb8! Be2
Rb8 threat 2.Qb1+ then 3.Qf1#. So Black must play 1.... Be2

2.Rh8! Kg2
Rh8 is a strong move to attack through H line. As Mr.Mip said, now Black is in zugzwang position. Here, next Black Bishop's move can't protect both threats from 3.Qf1# or 3.Bg1#, so it's better for Black to play 2.....Kg2

3.Ne1# (or Ng1#)
A strong move to check through Bishop Be4 while keeping f line through Rook Rf7. Black Bishop is pinned by the Rook Rd2 and 'Safety box' h3 has been kept by Rook Rh8.

Well, r u still interested in next 'broken Indo sidewalk puzzle #7' ??? Coming soon.
