More Sidewalk Puzzles

This is the first 'Indonesian sidewalk'-puzzle I encountered. And like first love it retains a special place in my memories. Note the similarity of the position with 'Broken mate #1'. Whether the solution is similar or not, I leave to you to decide.

Excellent! I was so discouraged after failing to find the answer to the last mate in 3 puzzle. Ironically I had set up the correct mating pattern, however I used the wrong bishop to reinforce the a2 bishop. The bishop I used cut off the Rc8's influence allowing the king to escape to c2

Hopefully I will fare better in this puzzle.

A really murky hint, if there ever was one!
Even confused me - and I know the solution...

Murky hint? Not really.
One of those patterns will be used in 3rd move.

I have put this game up in the viewer so people can move the pieces around to try and solve the mystery!

Not a difficult puzzle at all. Here is my first attempt:

1. Ne3 Rd2 2. Ngf5 Rh2 3. Qe1#

I think there is more to this puzzle than that AO.

Nice try AO, but what if instead of 2...Rh2 black produces 2...Re2/Rf2/Rc2/Rxb2? Then mates Qg2? and Rh7? are still prevented.

Okay, well what about this variation?

1. Nf5 Rh8 (if 1...Rd7 then 2. Re5! creating a double mate threat)
2. Re7 Rh2
3. Re1+

Hmmm... Something to think about AO:
1.Nf5 Rd7
2.Re5 Re7!
3.???

Rook on e7 can be taken 4 ways, but no mate...

That little rook is turning into a brilliant defender. Okay, I request the first hint. I will crack this problem!

Please notice my previous hint, Alex. Bcoz black rook covers both of HORIZONTAL n VERTICAL line, so u must try to make this rook only covers 1 side. So u can easily checkmate black king through uncovered side. In other variants, of course DIAGONAL attacking is needed to checkmate black king.

Even if black won't play Rxc8, the first and second move are the same. After 2.Bd4 there is a double mating threat.

It was a good hint by the way, probably too helpful though

Very sharp Simon - but not quite correct.
1.Rc8 Rf8
2.Bd4 Rf2!
3.??? All three mates (Rh8/Qg1/Qh3) are covered by the nimble rook.

Back to interpreting the hints....
