Venue is Chess Victoria 2008 HQ at 3 Rochester rd., Canterbury.
Pairings will be released soon!

The tournament is presented by Halsteen PTY.LTD (Director Eddy Levi) Chess Victoria (President Katrin Wills) and Chess Australia PTY.LTD (Director Leonid Sandler Leonid Sandler's Australian Chess Coaching - Home).

thats some poor mans prize money , i wonder what the organizers got paid to put this togeather , id hope it was nothing , australia's best going up against some of the worlds best for a chance at $1000 no way , they have to be all paided to start with , plus the prize should be way more!

the people behind chess get a big FAIL from me .

to be continued in another thread.

CHESS PLAYERS ARE ACCUSTOMED TO POOR PRIZE MONEY! THESE PRIZES LOOK LIKE PAR FOR THE COURSE.

Harsh words. This tournament has struggled to survive on a shoestring budget for a number of years. Instead, perhaps some positives could be looked for, such as the chance for an IM norm being created, a round robin tournament actually being hosted, and a congratulations to a bunch of dedicated organisers (unpaid for definite...I got nothing when I tried to organise it a couple of years ago, and actually donated a couple of hundred dollars to the kitty) and players for making this event happen.

Of course, if critics like yourself want to see conditions improved, then I'm sure the organisers would be happy to receive any donations you could send

These are par for the course. Chess is not a professional sport in Australia and until it becomes so prizes are going to be like this. Sponsorship for chess events is very hard to arrange, so we should be thankful for the sponsors we have and accept that some events are going to have lesser prize money. Sad, but a fact of life.

Most of us aren't good enough to play for the money that is available, so even if it were bigger prizes, it would make little differnence. But your points are well taken and I agree with you.

Default The OPENING ceremony

The Sandman welcomed sponsors, players and visitors to the resurrected Australian and Victorian Masters event.
The Arbiters are Leonid Sandler and Gary Bekker.
David Flude has offered to input games to a database.
Carl Gorka has taken on the task of producing bulletins.
Pics have been sent to the CV web-master.
A feature game will be in real-time relay each day via
tfd
Smirnov v West in play as I type.

At the feature game move 28 white introduces the concept of justice in chess. Black has played carefully (and with advantage) until this point but now presents a blunder for white to take advantage of.
However, White plays Ra8 and the opportunity has gone.

Default How could I?

Picture of the player-analysis of the now famous double_IM one-ply blunder now on the Chess Victoria web-site.

Other pics from round 1 also on display.
Straight from the Sandman's iPhone to you.

Default From the Sandman...early this morning

Australian masters 2008
Just a few brief notes about Round 1 games.

Smirnov-West started slowly with early queens swap soon black won a pawn but Vladimir had some compensation as black king was stuck in the middle of the board and then

Guy blundered the whole piece but Vladimir was probably under impression that his bishop was on g7 and did not accept an early X-mass present.
Soon draw was agreed.

In Levi-Rujevic game black has fully equalised after thematical central break d5 in Sicilian defence but Eddy then overpressed and Mirko very nicely converted small advantage to a full point.

Hamilton-Gorka -another Sicilian defence and again after d5 break it seems to me that black was ok but in mutual timetrouble Doug managed to break through and checkmated Carl king.Nice attacking game from former Australian Champion.

Hacche had close to winning position against Dizdarevic but could not convert and in endgame Mehmedalia managed to salvage half point.

Today round 2
Rujevic-Hacche
West-Levi
Gorka-Smirnov
Two other games
Cheng-Hamilton and Solomon-Dizdarevic will be played Friday December 12th at 10-00am.

Default Guy West Game

It looks like our good mates at CC are having a little trouble putting up the Guy West Game, I could only play up to about move 5. Accordingly, I've decided to lend a helping hand by putting the game up here. Hopefully, if I do this correctly people can see the rest of the game after move 5.

I hope no one minds.
