This is going to be a very big chess weekend with numbers expected to exceed that of last year; the local players' last minute entries are still to come. Will the last IM or GM to leave the eastern states please turn out the lights?
Local identities Bill Anderson Smith and George Howard have been spruiking the dinner and it is good value. This year there is also a canteen available. I spoke with Cathy Sampson who was lining up to do this. The profits were going towards setting up a toy library in a needy village in Vietnam. Safe travel to all who are making the trip. Enjoy the chess and the hospitality. |

Thank you to the players who supported the canteen at the Freytag Checkmate Open. This initiative was a win-win for the tournament and the charity involved. Among other items an incredible 250 sandwiches and 200 muffins were sold!
Volunteers Cathy Sampson, Rita McKechnie and Linda Butcher raised $1500 towards their Vietnamese toy library project. Cathy was thrilled when one junior player's mum presented her with a substantial bag of new toys. Cathy will be heading over later in the year to set it all up. |
