Default Burnie Club News

While young (12) Vincent Horton has been making a name for himself in winning the Tasmanian Open recently Alastair Dyer has been virtually written off as a former "shooting star" by the Orifice, however if Dyer is a has-been he seems to be unaware of it as quickly smashed Russell Horton's Najdorf last wednesday to retain his title as Burnie Club Champion.
Perhaps some one should remind hinm that he is on the scrap heap

Yours truly, Phil Donnelly had a relatively easy win over many times former champ Dragan Radosavljevic to give himself a very good chance of joining Dyer in the No. 1 spot and sharing the title. To do so Donnelly must defeat newcomer Jackson Jolly in his last game.

The tournament has been plagued by some very strange goings on in the round robin draw wherein some players had 9 whites and 7 blacks and vice versa.

To further muddy the water all of Dyer's 9 white's were against the top 9 players (based on ratings order as it was at the beginning of the event).
While for me the situation was reversed.
All of my blacks were against the top end of the field (with exception of a white against Mile Pavicic who withdrew before the game was played).

In my view this gave Dyer an unfair advantage however the tournament committeee disagreed.
I would be interested to hear other independent opinions on this unusual scenario.

News on both the Club championship and the Tas Open at the usual place

Burnie Chess

Phil.

Yes, jealousy is not one of his better qualities! Mr Dyer is a great chess ambassador for Tasmania. The sooner the ACF's Tasmanian realizes that, and becomes supportive of Tasmania's most talented junior, the better off the game will be.

There is no place for this attitude, or at least there shouldn't be.

Best

Default Horton wins Tasmania Open

Also, just to clarifiy my above post, it occurred to me that there are actually 2 Tasmanians on the ACF. I was referring to Kevin Bonham, and not the TCA representative to the ACF.

Default The French with 6...g5? (Lemon variation)

Another really excellent game from the 12 year old local wunderkind, Vincent Horton, has come to hand from the recent Tasmanian Open.

This time ex-Kiwi master of sorts, (now a Tas resident), Tony Dowden was Vincent's punching bag in a highly entertaining encounter.

Game at Burnie Chess

Default GamesTas2008

I have finished an updated version of GamesTas database and posted it (Chessbase/Fritz) format on the BCC site at

BurnieChess

There's close to 500 games between 1998 and 2008 but the bad news is that they are all ex Tasmanian events!

No, what I wrote was not "ex Tasmanian" but "ex Tasmanian events", meaning FROM Tasmanian events.

Default Robert Isted tournement off with a bang!

My glory as Club Champ was well and truly tarnished last wednesday when I walked into a knockout punch from one of the Club's talented (Charlie Smith).
Game and some amusing photos up in the usual place
