Greetings,
The 2012 Australian juniors kicked off on a typical cloudy and overcast summer day in Melbourne. After numerous speeches from many dignitaries the kids finally hit the chessboards. The onlookers included many anxious parents and a literal who's who of the Australian coaching scene, with a few notable exceptions because of the Queenstown tournament in New Zealand. This was magnificently supported by a very large group of parent volunteers, who labored selflessly over important tasks such as coffee making and BBQ maintenance. Thank goodness it wasn't 40 degrees! The tournaments differed in type ranging from round robins to swiss formats, all dependent on the numbers in the field. Playing areas were basically split into two sections. The older U18 and U16 groups played upstairs with some semblance of serious quietness, albeit a little bit cramped, but with areas set aside for analysis and coaching. The younger robust U10 and U 8 sections were played downstairs in a large glass air conditioned room that seemed almost perfect for the task. Parents could observe inside the room or from a distance outside the event. Although, one could not help thinking about the classic Searching for Bobby Fischer scene, where parents were locked out of the room for good reason. Lets just say some parents were a little more enthusiastic then others and I am sure most of the close observation was mostly curiosity. Although I did notice the standard Vulture circling whenever an upset occurred for any game that lasted more then 30 minutes. Chessplayers and other onlookers do enjoy the drama of a good fight in its final moments. This years tournament has seen David Cordovers Tornelo system being used for the recording of games. A wonderful product, in my opinion, despite its rating issues. Competitors are encouraged to enter their games in a database after the event. It is a difficult concept for most of the younger players and their parents, as few know the intricacies of scoring a chess game properly. Most kids are scoring for the very first time with pen an paper. Tornelo is pretty easy to use and very user friendly. To be honest, I think Tornelo helps both the parents and children obtain chess culture. A very important and underestimated side of chess. This reflective side of learning is the most critical step in a players development. I urge all chess players to really think through how beneficial this product would be for the Australian chess scene. What it does is make chess accessible to the masses in an easy format. Get on board, support its development and lobby the ACF to use this wonderful piece of technology. Oh yeah, back to the chess. Good games, not quite as intense as the half time soccer match (wow how skilled were some of the players) . Still waiting for the kids versus adults or State of origin cricket match!
