Issue 2007.45 - December 19
Tuesday summer swiss Well the Tuesday Summer swiss did come to the promised to exiting finish. David and Shane locked together on 5 with Luke only half a point behind and this is how it finished. Aquick win for David on board one and one of the longest games ever witnessed between Luke and Shane, where Shane went from a win to a draw to a loss on time. Actually the most fascinating game was on board 3 between Laurie Dalton and Anurag Sannidhanam The pair had met the week before in the Friday Xmas swiss with a win to Anurag This time Laurie managed to reverse the result. I think laurie had an edge throughout the game but Anurag ever recourceful kept finding good moves almost until the end. Here is the final cross table Code:

However, the enthusiasm of our energetic President, Gladys Liu, is contagious and a good crowd arrived at 5pm to be greeted by fresh seafood salads, hot pizzas, and drinks. Quickly the many juniors settled into playing the social TRANSFER and BLITZ, while seniors such as Scott Sharman, David Flude, Roger Croft, Elliott Renzies, Marcus Raine, Trevor Stanning, and Laurie Dalton played more sedate styles of chess and debated the merits of chess variants. A definite attraction was a couple of GO players who challenged Derek Yu and Chris Wallis in this Asian board-game, and showed that there is a lot to be learned in the deceptively simple game. 6pm came and it was time for speeches. (And in the background, time for Rachel Siah to order another delivery of pizzas as the good turnout had made short work of the first order). Gladys highlighted the success of Box Hill CC in the chess community and the blossoming of the Canterbury Juniors Chess Club, which was supported in its formative years by Box Hill. Gerrit Hartland gave a full history of significant occasions for the Box Hill club. Gary Wastell, President of the Australian Chess Federation, spoke in appreciation of the teamwork by the Box Hill Committee over many years. Robert Clark, local State Parliamentary member, said he appreciated how significant it was for a voluntary organisation, such as a chess club, to still be going strong after 55 years. Then it was time for Gladys to introduce the piece de resistance’, a special cake with the decorations having a chess-board theme, topped by fruit pieces dripped in chocolate and carved as chess pieces. Of course we sang the happy birthday song. My favourite part of the day was the unveiling of a brand-new honour-board to record Box Hill Chess Club champions and presidents. It is a mighty sight and our thanks to the donors who supported the fund-raising earlier in the year. I spoke with Elliott Renzies after the ceremonies and he said he had a tear in his eye during the speeches. A tear of joy at being part of a lovely social occasion. It was time for farewells and best wishes at 8.30pm. Well-done Gladys and Rachel and their helpers. Club President’s message – Gladys Liu
2007 has been a fruitful year for the Box Hill Chess Club. Core events and Open Day We have successfully fulfilled our regular commitments set for the year which include our well received tournaments on the Tuesday, Friday and Weekend Calendars. The first ever Chess Open Day hosted by the Club in March attracted more than 150 guests and good media coverage. The Open Day also boosted the number of interested juniors in our coaching sessions and new classes had to be created on Sunday to cater for the increased demand. Vic Open, Vic Junior and Our Elite Juniors In June and July, Box Hill Chess Club had the honor to host the Victorian Chess Open and the Victorian Junior Chess Championships. Both events had recorded a significant attendance of strong players and an exhibition of exciting games. A number of our elite juniors including Chris Wallis, Zhigen Lin, Eugene Schon, Lawrence Matheson, Sally Yu and Derek Yu had represented Australia in a number of international competitions this year. Reaching Out During the year, the committee of the Box Hill Chess Club has endeavored to extend our service to people with disability, senior citizens and causal chess players. Posters were displayed in local shopping strips and invitations were sent to local Rotaries and Lions to encourage people join our social chess sessions on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. 55th Anniversary Celebration Two weeks ago, we celebrated our 55th Anniversary in style. A Birthday party was held at our club venue with special guests Robert Clark MP (Member for Box Hill), Gary Wastell (President of Australian Chess Federation), Neil and Mary Affect (from our landlord Canterbury Masons), sponsors, coaches, media, members and their family and friends. Committee I would like to thank the hard working committee, Rolf Exner, Howard Liston, Kerry Lyall, Laurie Dalton, David Schneider for their support. A special thank you to our Club Captain Gerry Hartland for keeping the Club in good shape, our Treasurer Trevor Stanning for ensuring a healthy balance, our very capable Secretary Rachel Siah and a person I can call on anytime David Flude. The Year Ahead In order to take the Club to a new height, great talents, new bloods and more hands are needed. I am extremely grateful that George Zaprodsky and Greg Matheson have joined the committee of the Canterbury Junior Chess Club. Box Hill Chess Club’s AGM will be conducted in the early part of 2008. I invite you to consider joining the committee and to work together in bringing greater results to our Club and those who love chess. Have a lovely Christmas and a successful and prosperous New Year. Gladys Liu President – Box Hill Chess Club 24/12/07

Bulletin by Trevor Stanning This was the second year for this new event for Victoria, catering for chess-players at a bit of a loose end in the first week of January. In its first year, January 2007, the tournament promoter was Geoff Saw from the Dark Horse Chess Club. For 2008, Geoff passed on the opportunity to run the event and instead the Canterbury Junior Chess Club responded to many requests to run an event that prepared juniors for the forthcoming 2008 Australian Juniors in Sydney. Sponsorship money was also available to attract some strong seniors to enter the event, and the opportunity to play against Leonid Sandler proved to be very attractive to seniors who were on holidays over the period. More than 50 players took advantage of the substantial (25% off) early-bird discount Many senior players commented on the pleasantness of the 2-round/day schedule, which gave them the opportunity to wander around Canterbury’s tree-lined streets and gardens between rounds. On the other hand this is a bit of a downer for juniors who finish their games earlier and require some supervision by parents between the morning round and the afternoon round. The enjoyment of all seemed apparent over the four days. A new feature on board 1 was an electronic-sensing-chess-board, called a DGT board, which automatically tracked moves and fed the signal from the board to computers in a viewing area and outwards to the Internet web site for the Club. This feature proved to be good publicity as I was advised by players from other Clubs that they followed (remote from the playing Hall) the progress of board 1 games throughout our tournament. My many thanks go to Shaun Fielder for extensive work he carried out to set-up the computer facilities. I believe we can quickly activate this facility for all future major events at the Club. And so to the games, in round 1 the major surprise result was Laurence Matheson’s win over Cedric Antolis. In round 2 Peter Frost ceded 610 rating points to the top seed, but achieved a draw; this may be Peter’s finest result. As it was a board 1 game the moves were displayed in real-time to the viewing lounge, and to the Internet. Leonid Sandler’s loss of a half-point elevated Sam Dalton and Douglas Lindberg to the top board and at the end of round 3 Douglas was the sole player on 3/3. This earned Douglas a pairing against Leonid Sandler, which looked like being the most significant pairing of the tournament; Leonid won the full point. After 4 rounds Sam Dalton, the 9th seed, was on 2/2 and you could have got long odds on him featuring at the prize giving. Jason Tang had a nice upset win against Eugene Schon, and Rhys Hopkins did similar against Cedric Antolis. In round 5 Thomas Feng had a good win against Timothy Trott, but most games went according to ratings. So to round 6, we had two players on 4.5/6 and paired on board 1; all eyes in the viewing lounge watched with disbelief as Wallis moved both knights twice in the first 6 moves, and Sandler played N(g1)-f3, N(f3)-g1, N(g1)-f3 in the first 6 moves; the ultimate cat and mouse. Just as an extremely complex position developed a series of exchanges reduced the game to a dull bishops ending. There were parallels to Melbourne weather with a storm build-up; a quick front moves through, and then benign conditions after the change. 1/2 - 1/2 was the outcome. Sam Dalton could have been paired in this round against seeds 3, 4, or 19; the computer was kind and arranged 19 as Sam’s opponent. Sam duly won the game against Zeljko Podvorac and is the way of pairings rules that matched Sam against Leonid Sandler in the final round. Surely too hard a task for Sam. Sam Dalton v Leonid Sandler was the game piped into the viewing lounge and out to the Internet, via the DGT board. It proved to be an intensely competitive offering. Sam came out of the opening better, then totally squandered the advantage and then suddenly had it won again. I will get David Flude to annotate this game and present on our web site in the next week. Two locals were overall winners on 6/7; Chris Wallis and Sam Dalton. Full winners list for each division are available at http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/e2008.../standings.htm The prize giving was a social affair and it is clear this January event fills a need in the chess calendar. Congratulations to our captain Gerrit Hartland on a successful event, and thanks to Roger Croft who attended early each day to help with the equipment set-up. 2008 Calendar The calendar and tournament information on the web site is now available. Hard copies of our complete 2008 calendar are also available at the club. 2008 Coaching at the club All first term coaching details are now on view on the club website complete with on line entry forms Payments may be made by cheque by mail or with cash when we next meet. Australian Champion I had a call this morning from Frank Solomon the proud father of Stephen Solomon the newly crowned 2008 Australian Champion. Frank rang to remind me that Stephen started his chess career at the Box Hill Chess Club as a small boy in the sixties. What spurred him on to become a chess player was the gift of a chess book from the club library by the then secretary John Illingworth a book which Stephen apparently still has. Frank’s call started me thinking about the achievements of the many young players we have had at the club since it was formed in 1952. Although Stephen is the only Australian Champion who got his start at BHCC, there are a few Australian Junior champions who got going at the club. 1954 Don Robson 1964/65 Bill Kerr 1980 Stephen Solomon 2004 Denis Bourmistrov Stephen’s 1st tournament I am not sure of but one of his first wins was against stalwart member Arthur Cottingham whom he beat in 9 moves. Arthur who was the most generous of losers was very proud of the game [!] and showed it to us many times over 08 Australian Junior There are quite a few Box Hill and Canterbury Junior members playing in the Sydney Australian Junior Championships. You can follow their progress on the web site http://www.nswjcl.org.au/AustralianJ...2008/index.htm. Members spotted so far in the Under 18 open Chris Wallis, Eugene Schon, Cedric Antolis, Anurag Sannidhanam Derek Yu, Sam, Joshua, and Micah Dalton, Justin Tan. In the under 12 Michael Chan, Laurence Matheson, Isaac and Joshua Ng, Daniel Yuan, Peter Walmueller, Andrew Gurevich,

I expect a good turn out New season Swiss A 7 round Swiss tournament in starting February 6 Details: • Visitors’ welcome. • Clocks start 7:45 pm. • Rate of play: 60 min. plus 30 seconds per move from move 1 • ACF rated. • Entry fee $15. • Visitors fee $15 for non-BHCC or CJCC members. • 7 rounds Playing nights: Rd 1, February 5 Rd 2, February 19 Rd 3, February 26 Rd 4, March 4 Rd 5, March 18 Rd 6, March 25 Rd 7 April 1 Club closed nights: February 12, March 11 Prize fund: $5 of each entry received will go to the prize fund. Minimum guaranteed prize fund $100 Entry forms are available at the club and on the website Sunday Coaching about to start All first term coaching details are now on view on the club website complete with on line entry forms Payments may be made by cheque by mail or with cash when we next meet. 2008 Australian Junior As reported in our last bulletin a group of our players competed in the Australian Junior Championships. Feedback that I am receiving indicates that this was a very well organised and administered tournament. In particular the internet website was excellent providing round by round draws and results as well as games in a format so that they can be played through on the internet. UNDER 18 OPEN. Our players all acquitted themselves well in what was a very strong tournament. Brief notes follow. Chris Wallis [BHCC club champion 07 Vic Junior Champion] 8 points final position 4-5 overall Chris led the tournament until losing to the eventual winner Junta Ikeda. This was a very difficult long game and Chris lost the following game as well but finished the tournament strongly. Sam Dalton [07 Under 14 Vic runner up]– 7.5 points final position 6-9 overall, 2-3 under 16 A tremendous performance by Sam including beating Chris Wallace Cedric Antolis [07 rookies cup winner] – 7 points final position 10-16 overall, 3-4 under 14 This is very good performance by Cedric especially bearing in mind that some of the entrants were several years older. Eugene Schon – 7 points final position 10-16 overall 3-4, under 14 The same comments apply as to the performance of Cedric. Eugene was clearly winning against Junta Ikeda, the eventual winner of the tournament, but allowed him to escape with a draw in a rook and pawn endgame. Derek Yu – final position 10-16 overall 4-7 under 16 A very good solid performance. Joshua Dalton 5.5 points - final position 36-48 A sound performance Micah Dalton 3.5 points -final position overall 74-78 Tried hard UNDER 18 – GIRLS This was a 13 round robin which made it a very tough tournament. Sally Yu- [Under 18 Vic Girls Champ] 11 points - final position 2 Under 16 Girls Champion Sally came second a half point behind the winner who she beat in her individual game. Sally played fighting chess throughout the tournament as is shown by her results – eleven wins two losses and no draws. In my opinion she should give serious consideration to playing in the open next year Stephanie Ang [Under 14 Vic Girls Champ] 4 points overall position 11 Stephanie played above her rating. UNDER 12 OPEN We had a large number of entrants in this tournament that all acquitted themselves well. Lawrence Matheson [07 under 12 Vic champ] 9.5 points Under 12 champion An excellent all round performance by Lawrence. Yi Liu – 9 points 2nd overall Yi played at Box Hill until his family moved to Queensland. The move into banana bender territory does not appear to have had a negative impact on his chess. Anurag Sannidhanam - 4-5 overall 1-2 under 10 [lost the title play-off] Another really good performance Michael Chan 6-13 overall 3rd under10 A very good performance Andrew Gurevich [07 under 10 Vic Champ] 6.5 points 14-19 overall very solid result. Isaac Ng 6.5 points 14-19 overall As with Andrew a very solid result. Joshua Ng 6 points 20-24 overall A good result. The Ng brothers performed well. Peter Wallmueller 5.5 points Under 8 champion. Scoring fifty percent in the tournament and winning the under eight prize is a tremendous achievement. Joshua Devarajh. 5 points 33-41 overall Another player in the under ten category who scored reasonably despite there being older players in the tournament. Daniel Yuan. [07 under 8 Vic Champ]. 4.5 points 42-45 overall 2 under 8 Another youngster who performed really well 2009 Australian Junior Last week I wrote Chess Victoria’s ambitious plans to have the 2009 Australian Junior Championships held in Melbourne at the Box Hill Chess Club’s Rochester Road venue suffered a serious set back when the ACF council rejected the submission canning the venue, the administrators and the submission. Some one queried the meaning of the term to can. Folks it means to rubbish something or someone and that is what they did. Mind you it took them almost 6 months to convey their displeasure Subscribe / unsubscribe If you wish to subscribe to these newssheets go to our website: <http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/>www.boxhillchess.org.au and enter your email address, your first name, and your last name and submit. Entries close: 12.15 Tournament Starts: 12.30 2008 Autumn Cup round 4 completed The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn There was only one upset victory in round 4 with Isaac getting the better of his mentor David Flude. However there were some interesting draws What about Yu v Yu Dalton S v Chan M Chung v Matheson and Allan Yu v Jusuf Omeragic. This Friday we have the Annual general meeting and round 5 set for next week when we will see the clash Wallis v Schon live on the Internet. 08 Victorian Junior Championships The Victorian Junior championships will be held during the June July school holidays as follows: Under 12 tournament 7rounds June 28 and June 29 Under 18 tournament 9 rounds from June 30 to July 3 What gave me a BUZZ this week around the Chess Club. First. The Club hosted the playoff for the 2007 Victorian Championship. Last November Mirko Rujevic and Igor Goldenberg tied for first in the Championship proper. A four game play-off was arranged for the past two week-ends with games played at the rate of 90 minutes each and a 30 second increment. We were able to display the games live to the world via the internet by using our new digitised board and clock. [Our Friday and Tuesday board 1 local Club games are also displayed live as they occur. Tune in via the prominent link on our revamped home_page. Or visit the games_archive also displayed on our home_page.] After 16 hours of hard games, the two honourable gentlemen were locked at 2-2 and declared joint holders of the Victorian title. Congratulations to Mirko and Igor. Second. Four of the mums sitting around on the side-lines of the Sunday 2-3.30pm novice coaching class decided that they would like to learn chess. So a starters class was formed with Sophie, Lydia, Carol, May, and 5yo Stephanie using a quiet corner of the building to learn how the pieces move, how to win quickly, and how to have fun. It was a very pleasant session and we will move on to some more lessons after the term break. Third Olgerts (Bob) Bergmanis has been a regular at our Tuesday 7.45pm tournaments. In recent years he has been prone to offering a quick draw and we wondered if the competitive spirit of this 80+ gentleman had dimmed a little. However, two fine wins over Victor Kildisas and Shane Lawson show a rejuvenated veteran. Well done Bob; your games are installed in our games archive on the web-site as they were board 1 games. Tuesday New season Swiss Club closed nights: March 11 The round 4 broadcast game between Bergmanis and Flude provided us with an early draw. This was not due to a lack of fighting spirit. The player's reached a position where they both had to repeat moves or suffer a serious disadvantage. Adam Hayman gave his opponent an easy win by allowing his mobile to go off. How can this be I tell them every week TURN YOUR MOBILE OFF! Are we listening out there it applies to all tournaments at all levels. Ait is the rule. The outcome of the Yuan, Chan game is uncertain, as there was no result and a very scratchy scoresheet No Name Loc Total Result Name Loc Total 1 Bergmanis, Olgerts 1576 [3] .5:.5 Flude, David A 1660 [3] 2 Foo, Kit Ming 601 [2] 0:1 Sannidhanam, Anurag 1687 [2] 3 Wong, Joseph 601 [2] 0:1 Lawson, Shane 1691 [2] 4 Renzies, Elliott 1416 [2] 0:1 Lemmel, Oliver 973 [2] 5 Zhou, Robin 501 [2] 0:1 Matheson, Laurence 1547 [2] 6 Chmiel, Rad 1713 [1.5] 1:0 Hayman, Adam 1201 [1.5] 7 Shore, Dominic 1401 [1.5] 0:1 Guo, Murphy 577 [1.5] 8 Yeong, Ian 401 [1] 1:0 Anderson, Bill 715 [1] 9 Yuan, Daniel 778 [1] 0:1 Chan, Raymond 868 [1] 10 Neymanis, Eric 1281 [1] 1:0 Neymanis, Eric 1281 [1] 11 Li, Oswald 201 [0] 0:1 Sayers, Craig 1089 [1] 12 Bull Quitano, Damar 301 [0] 1:0 Tan, Ryan 201 [0] 13 Yuan, David 456 [0] .5:0 BYE Sunday coaching next term We are starting to fill out the details see below Sunday morning senior coaching April 6, April 20, May 4, May 18, June 5.
