Again, I applaud the BHCC for producing a quality club newsletter. Just one inaccuracy I noticed. In the Under 12's in Hobart, Andrew Lau did not score 11/11 as he wasn't playing. If he had have been playing, he may not have scored 11, but I'm sure he would have acquitted himself well

Default correction

Andrew Pan was the victim of the typing slip. There are 2 Andrew Laus at Canterbury Junior Chess both talented but neither played in Hobart. Mistakes are not only the lifeblood of chess but also of writing news sheets

I only know 1 Andrew Lau, so I'm learning something new each day.
Seriously, you're doing a good job, and I look forward to reading the bulletin each week

Default Newsletter from the President of Chess Victoria Inc.

Chess Victoria...President's Newsletter.....March 2010(#4)

Hi to all my friends in the chess community.

This newsletter concentrates on an update on entries to the Victorian Teams Tournament.

I am happy to report that a very encouraging number of entries have been received. This is a far better position than last year when we had to cancel the interclub event due to lack of entries at the dead-line.

For 2010 we have high confidence of entries by
Ranges Chess Club
Noble Park Chess Club
Melbourne Chess Club
Hobsons Bay Chess Club
Canterbury Juniors Chess Club
Geelong Chess Club
Box Hill Chess Club
City of Yarra Chess Club
Croydon Chess Club
and in addition we have hopes of entries from Ballarat Chess Club, Frankston Chess Club, Elwood Chess Club, Dandenong Chess Club and Mentone Chess Club.

The larger Clubs indicated that they could field multiple teams in the competition but they had concerns that the ‘B’ team would make some of the contests a bit of a walk-over.

With the potential strength of the entries we have decided to run two separate divisions. An A Division and a B Division. In some cases it will be clear if a team is to be allocated to A (for example the Noble Park team would clearly be A), and in other circumstances (for example the 6 Canterbury Junior players rated just around the 1000 level) a team would be very appropriate in B.

Therefore we are re-opening entries until Saturday the 27th of March for Clubs to review additional teams they may wish to enter. Already a few of the big Clubs have indicated they will enter up to 3 teams; one in the elite A Division, and others in the now-proposed B division.
The Chess Victoria Executive have also discussed and decided that appropriate recognitions in this first year of the Teams Tournament will be for
• Winning teams
• Best board
• Trophies, medals, and book vouchers.

Finally, I just confirm teams can be entered by groups of individuals (I hear speculation of an ‘oldies group’ based on a holder of multiple Australian titles), or by non-affiliated organisations. The more the merrier. Perhaps the Chess Victoria Executive may enter a team.

As a chess community we should be thrilled to see the re-emergence of enthusiasm for team chess. I thank Carl Gorka for having the concept that he has put forward which seems to avoid the time-event-clashes that put Interclub into disfavour.

All entries to me at leonid sandler [lsandler2004@yahoo.com.au].

So would a team with an average rating of 1400 be in the B Division

I would expect so Mike.
The teams in A are likely to have 2000+ on average.

The MCC are still arranging teams but it looks like we'll have something approaching the following.

2 teams that may be able to play in the first division.

1. Jager, Jordan, Morris, Pyke, Skiotis
2. Beaumont, Gorka, Kildisis, Ly, Lycett, Pecori

Other teams that may be better placed in the lower division.

1. Addamo, Lekkas, Tanner, Tuncer
2/3. Ashlock, Chmiel, Dale, Krishmanurty, Martin, Warren.

It is possible that these teams will change or that more players may want to add themselves. Thanks goes to CV for extending the deadline for 2 weeks.
