Default BOX Hill AND CANTERBURY JUNIOR CHESS NEWS ISSUE 2008.28– July 16

July Rookies Cup.
Sponsored by Zed chess: www.zedchess.com.au
Contact coach George Zaprudsky

The Rookies tournament of Sunday 13 July started at the same time as the prizewinners ceremony for the ERGAS national training squad. This caused a little confusion as some from the ERGAS squad decided that 7 straight days of training, coaching, and tournament play was not enough; they were going to play the ROOKIES too. But the photo. Op. kept them from the round 1 start time.
The Rookies welcomed the return to chess of adult Efim Kishniveski who had last played 8 years ago. He found in the early rounds that juniors are no push-over. We had a few latecomers for round 1 and I encourage those players who come from language classes on Sunday morning that they should enter the Rookies a few days before the event. It was fortunate that we could call on Roger Croft and Efrim Tionko to make sure every-one had a round 1 game. Thanks for this assistance guys.
The data-entry before the start of play was done by Angus Sankaran while our captain, Gerry Hartland was on ERGAS duties. Thanks Angus. And Howard Chan and Roger Croft assisted us in the set-up of equipment and tables in particular.
By round 2 we were back in the routine of our smooth operations.
The canteen opened and Toni Ziffer set to work to feed a few hungry ankle-biters.
The winners at the end of the day were
Rating group 1 Eq 1st. Cedric Antolis, Nicholas Liu
Rating group 2 1st Gene Lai 2nd Bryan Ng on cb from Kit Ming Foo
Rating group 3 1st Joash Arulprakasam 2nd Joshua Devrajh on cb from Deniz Tuncer, Adeline Antolis, Ian Yeong
Rating group 4 1st Enoch Fan 2nd Wayne Cheung on cb from Zhong Yan Gan, Charlotte Dilnutt
Rating group 5 Eq Almog Leyzerman, Matthew Stewart, John Ni
QUEENS 1st Adeline Antolis 2nd Charlotte Dilnutt
ADULTS 1st David Flude 2nd Marcus Raine
At the end of the 7 rounds of Allegro, FIDE MASTER Bill Jordan offered to play simul. V ALL.
Thirty accepted the invitation and games proceeded to 7.15pm.
A useful experience for all.

2008 Ergas Training Camp

The whole of last week was taken up by the hosting of the National Ergas training camp. Russell Horton one of the parents wrote an intersting bulletin on the event. Here is the first paragraph with a link to the BHCC website where the whole article features.

Ergas squad members were treated to some outstanding coaching over 7 days of training in Melbourne. The squad was welcomed to the Box Hill Chess club by local political and chess dignitaries. Robert Jamieson IM provided an interesting introduction to the training camp with advice about how to become a chess nut with plenty entertaining commentary about his own competitive chess life. This includes snippets on psychology, training methods and some Australian chess history.

2008 Geelong Open Tournament Report – By Gary Bekker

The 2008 Geelong Open attracted 43 entrants, about the same as last year, including eight players rated over 2000.

Round 1:
Stephen Jago messed up a winning position against Domagoj Dragicevic and lost, Rhys Hopkins played a fine game against Leon Kempen to draw, and Roland Brockman missed an opportunity to win against Colin Savige but was able to force a draw in time trouble. Most other games went as expected.

Round 2:
Several interesting games on the top boards. The game Mehmedalija Dizdarevic - Svetozar Stojic was a fascinating battle. Tony Davis defeated Malcolm Pyke and Angelo Tsagarakis defeated James Morris. Rhys Hopkins had another good result defeating Max Mollard.

Round 3:
Some very tough fought games and surprising upsets. The board 2 game Cheng - Hacche was interrupted by an unusual clock incident. After move 40, with both players very short of time, the clock reset itself to the initial setup display. Thankfully observant spectators were able to recall the clock times and play was quickly resumed. Bobby Cheng handled the time pressure well and went on to win. Tony Davis defeated Domagoj Dragicevic with a massive attack on the queenside. Andrew Wemyss played a fine game to defeat Svetozar Stojic. At the end of the first day of play, Leonid Sandler, Bobby Cheng and Tony Davis share the lead with 3/3.

Round 4:
Young Bobby Cheng excited spectators by defeating the tournament's top seed, IM Leonid Sandler, to take the outright lead. Tony Davis' dream run came to an end with a loss to Colin Savage. Hogg blundered and lost to Dusan Stojic. David Hacche's bad luck continued with an unexpected loss to Mehmedalija Dizdarevic. Dragicevic and Morris won their games to stay in contention for prizes. Justin Tan defeated Eugene Shon. Anurag Sannidhanam failed to arrive for play without notifying the tournament organisers.

Round 5:
Bobby Cheng exchanged into an opposite coloured bishop ending and was held to a draw by Dusan Stojic. This allowed Mehmedalija Dizdarevic to tie with him for first by defeating Colin Savige with one of Mehmedalija's trademark kingside assaults. Leonid Sandler and Domagoj Dragicevic both won their games to come equal third with Dusan Stojic. Local Geelong player Michael Sugrue was awarded the Group A (U/2000) prize. Justin Tan and Oleg Grygoryan shared the Group B (U/1700) prize and Nikola Ivanov won the Group C prize.

Final Leading Scores:

1-2 Cheng, Bobby 4.5

Grades Tournaments

Both Tuesday and Friday grades tournament have started but there will still be some places for the latecomers however as there are even numbers in both tournaments entries will have to be in pairs. The recent rains prompted the allusion of entering in twos

The 2008 CV Winter Interclub competition.

After 2 rounds things are a little clearer at least in A grade Canterbury Juniors are ding well so far. Not so our Box Hill team but it is early days yet

Due to the lower teams having to play teams in the grades above the standings for the lower teams do not make much sense at this stage.

Grades Tournaments
Round 2 of the Friday Grades turned out to be a disaster No fewer than 8 players required a bye due in part by the unexpected arrival of the City of Yarra B team [accompanied by their A team] who expected to play round 3 of the Interclub but stayed to play the round 1 postponed game with unfortunate consequences for CJCC B team who lost 3 – 1.
After considerable thought on how to get the tournament back on track I decided to give those missing players a ½ point bye and add another round on the 12 September for everyone
The games for round 1 of Tuesday tournament proceeded much more peacefully
Here is round 2, which will answer some questions.

Fludey’s endgame hints

Rules of thumb for the endgame
Use your king in the endgame to attack opposition pawns or support
your own pawns.
When you are one or more pawns ahead swap pieces not pawns.
When you are one or more pawns behind swap pawns not pieces.
When you are pawns ahead remember King and pawn endings are easiest
to win, then minor piece endings, queen endings are much more
difficult and rook endings give lots of chances to the defender.
Use your rook actively, put it behind passed pawns. If there are no
passed pawns try and put a rook on the seventh rank so that it can
gobble opposition pawns.
If you have the advantage try and keep pawns on both sides of the board.
Passed pawns should be advanced as quickly as possible.
A bishop is usually better than a knight but a queen and knight will
often beat a queen and bishop if the knight is supported by a pawn and
is close to the opposition king.
Bishops of opposite colours and no other pieces tends to be very
drawish. However Queens and bishops of opposite colour is anything but drawish.
Put your pawn on the opposite colour to your bishop so that the
bishop can move between the pawns.

Default From Dandenong CC via CV newsletter service.

Dandenong Chess Club Inc. is moving from the current premises.

The first night at the new premises will be Wednesday 6th August 2008

The new site is;

Jan Wilson Community Centre
Corner Halton & Jacksons Road
Noble Park North 3174
Melways Ref: Map 80 J10

The new venue is a much newer facility and a vast improvement on where
Dandenong Chess Club has been.
Congratulations to the committee for taking on board the members concerns
with the current venue, which were aired at the previous AGM.
There is plenty of off-street parking at the site, including disabled
parking and access.
And there will not be Bocce players making a ruckus outside the window as
we have been putting up with now.

Regards; Garry Lycett

The 2008 CV Winter Interclub competition.

Is being played at the Box Hill Chess Club in 2008.

For the past 3 fortnights our Club has been host for the Chess Victoria INTERCLUB competition on Friday nights.

We have welcomed teams from Elwood CC, Noble Park CC, Ranges CC, Croydon CC, and City of Yarra CC; while Box Hill and Canterbury have been well represented in the competition too.

Teams have 4 players for each evening and getting the correct number of players attending on the correct evening is a chore for each Team Captain that gives a few head-aches if there are last minute illnesses.

With one round to go it is interesting to review who is in prime position to win each grade.

In A Grade, ELWOOD have 10 points, which gives them a break on 1 point over the equal second-placed City of Yarra and Canterbury Juniors A.

The lower grades (B to D) are combined this year in an experimental approach to managing this competition. Box Hill B have a clear lead over 11 other teams, and it is certain the team of Scot Sharman, David Flude, Rad Chmiel, Jason Tang, and Roger Croft will take the medals for B Grade.

The INTERCLUB competition gives a scheduling problem for Box Hill CC as we need to run our Friday Grades tournament in the alternate weeks and this causes a little confusion for those who don’t closely watch our calendar. Nevertheless, it is good for chess in Victoria that Clubs get a chance to travel and meet with other Clubs.

Our under performing Box Hill A team will have its last match against Noble Park played in advance this coming Sunday afternoon

Default BOX Hill AND CANTERBURY JUNIOR CHESS NEWS

No Rookies Cup in September
Next Rookies Cup on October 12

Canterbury Junior Chess open day Sponsored by Telstra
Open Day Report
You have to love that sense of fear that comes to organisers about an hour before the start of an OPEN Day.
Refreshments…ready.
Equipment….ready.
Flyers…..ready.
Helpers…ready.
Displays….ready.
But will the visitors come?
And for a Chess Club, there remains the ambiguity of just what is a chess OPEN Day.
For the Canterbury Juniors Chess Club it means an opportunity to reach out into the wider community to make chess and fun available to those parents and children who see value in mind sports beyond the current focus on football and Olympics.
Our Club has been assisted in this ideal in 2008 by the support of a Telstra grants program targeted towards the community connecting together.
The fun day started with visitors arriving at 1pm where they we greeted with the chance to wander around looking at a picture record of the many Canterbury/ Box Hill juniors who had travelled to world chess events; this inspires new juniors to imagine a goal of representing their country.
Some visitors took the invitation to play against a Club member in a simultaneous chess match. The Australian U12 champion, Laurence Matheson, was playing 6 newcomers at the one time and defeating them one by one for hours on end. Rengan Vijaykumar was another strong junior playing all comers.
Our President, Gladys Liu, called for attention and explained that two coaching sessions were about to start; Rukman Vijaykumar taking the new advanced, and Derek Yu helping the complete novices. In addition, Gladys invited parents to participate in an information session that would assist parents choose coaching classes in Term 4. These were all well attended and lasted about an hour.
Then, it was time for a few thank you speeches by the invited dignitaries.
Robert Clark MLA; Dick Menting, Councillor and Chairman of the Bendigo Board; Erica Tang, chief contact from Telstra; and Gerrit Hartland, Captain of the Box Hill Chess Club.
Then, free eats and drinks…does it get any better than that.
That left another 90 minutes for chess fun and many, many pictures, of happy players, taken by Channel 31 and xxxx. More free coaching, and more playing of chess games, wrapped up a successful OPEN day.
Leonid Sandler, Vice-President of Chess Victoria was one notable in attendance.
Well done Gladys and her helpers: Antonette Ziffer in the Canteen, Laurie Dalton and Greg Matheson on displays, Roger Croft and David Flude on set-up, Gerrit Hartland on organisation, the junior coaches Rukman, and Derek, Laurence and Rengan for simul. Games, and a special thanks to Erica Chen for the tie-in with Telstra.

No requirement to be a strong chess player. J - see attached info

Sounds like a great idea, apart from cost, for Australian kids to travel there although the timing is not so good with end of the year exams etc. Please could you let juniors in your state know as soon as possible and if anyone is interested to contract me ASAP. In the unlikely event that we get more than 3 juniors interested in going, we would have to do some sort of quick selection.

Please contact me if you require any further information.

Regards

Jenni

The Chess Olympiad is one of the most significant
events in the world of chess and one of the greatest
sport events in the world with 150 nations participating
in it. As long as for 20 days the best chess players of the
world will contest for medals and for first time in the
history of the Chess Olympiad you can be there and
take part in it!
The International Youth Camp of the Chess Olympiad
will give you the opportunity to experience very closely
the Chess Olympiad together with 60 other young
people from all over the world and to look over the
shoulders of the stars playing their matches.
But the youth camp is even more than that!
You will get acquainted to different cultures and people
from all parts of the world and you will experience a lot
with them. In addition to this, we want to show you the
world-famous city of Dresden with its historic buildings
and places and also the capital city of Germany being
Berlin. Be ready for a diversified and amazing special
free-time-programme where you can take part in a lot
of activities.
With other young people and professional youthcoaches
of the German Chess-Youth you will stay at
the A&O Hotel in the city of Dresden, which is closely
situated to the venue of the Chess Olympiad.
Chess players between 16 and 20 years of age are
invited. It is not important to us, that you are especially
good at the game of chess. More than this, it is important
that you are curious about other people, are creative
and politically interested, and that you can understand
and speak English.
The expenses for accommodation and board and the
complete free-time-programme will be covered by the
German Chess Youth. You only have to pay for your own
travel expenses.
Do you want to take part in the International Youth
Camp of the Chess Olympiad? If so, please contact your
national chess federation. We are interested in a short
description about your person, about any activities you
enjoy in your free time besides playing chess, and would
like to know why you want to participate in the youth
camp.
Good luck to you!
Do you have any questions about the application or the
participation in the Youth camp? If so, please contact the
office of the German Chess Youth which will gladly help.
You can also find more information about the International
Youth camp on the website of the Chess Olympiad:
www.dresden2008.de .
The application deadline for international candidates
will be the 31 August 2008.

Report on the October ROOKIES.
The crowd really built up just before start-time 12.30 and caused a little delay to the start. A wonderful field of 62 players included many for the first time, and also a strong adult top end which included Victorian Championship players Ascaro Pecori and Carl Gorka.
The Queens Cup was won for October by Charlotte Dilnutt, which was only appropriate given her mum had organised repairs to the trophy earlier in the day. The Rookies Cup was won by Nicholas Lui who has won some previous monthly events; Anurag Sannnidhanam pressed closely for second in group J1

Thanks
To Mike Loh who has checked and repaired many digital clocks for us.
To Toni Ziffer who ran the canteen on the Rookies Day. Toni is a chess coach active in Schools; her company is called Chess RULES. Their next open event is a TRANSFER EVENT.........
To Roger Croft who has helped with the set-up of the Club boards/sets/clocks, and then proceeded to have an exceptional run of wins in many rounds of the Rookies tournament.
Coming EVENTS to our venue at 3 Rochester Rd Canterbury.
1) Bendigo Bank Chess championship 1 Nov. (2 rounds), 2 Nov. (2 rounds), 3 Nov. (1 evening round), 4 Nov. (2 rounds this is Cup Day)
This event is the largest event for the remainder of 2008. It is organised by the Elwood Chess Club but because of difficulties with their usual venue they have moved to our venue this year. It represents a one-off opportunity to play in this top event and be close to home. Early bird discounts available until October 30.
2) Canterbury Summer SWISS is now scheduled for Saturday 27 December to Tuesday December 30 2008. This is one day shorter than previously announced, and the change is made to give juniors a chance to travel to the Australian Junior Championship which starts in Adelaide in the first week of 2009. Sunday 23 November… Elite junior coaching in the morning (10.30-noon) is ON
Novice coaching 2pm till 3.30pm is ON

Coming EVENTS to our venue at 3 Rochester Rd Canterbury.
1) Canterbury Summer SWISS is now scheduled for Saturday 27 December to Tuesday December 30 2008. This is one day shorter than previously announced, and the change is made to give juniors a chance to travel to the Australian Junior Championship which starts in Adelaide in the first week of 2009. Flyers of our event are available at our Club.
Entries are starting to roll-in for this December event. Liam Hamilton, and the Daltons (Laurie, Mischa, Sam, Joshua) were first off the mark. David Hacche participated in the recent Victorian Championship and has now signed up for our December event.
The event is 8 rounds over 27/12, 28/12, 29/12, 30/12.

2) December Rookies is Sunday 14/12/2008. This is the final Rookies and Queens for the year and, for juniors, the last chance to get their name on the 2008 trophies. Most juniors will have finished exams by this date and we expect a terrific turn-out of strong juniors. The Rookies trophies are sponsored by zedChess, a coaching organisation directed by George Zaprudsky. George’s generous sponsorship, right through 2008, is appreciated by the Canterbury Juniors Chess Club.
One of us is in the Olympics
The Chess Olympiad is currently being held in Dresden, Germany.
Australian has sent both a mens team and a womens team to this huge event. The Australian mens team includes Darryl Johansen who is a member of the Box Hill Chess Club, and who recently represented Canterbury Juniors Chess Club in the Victorian Winter INTERCLUB series.
The best place to read about the chess Olympiad results is the blog of Amiel Rosario, a Sydney based chess player who is an accredited press agent in Dresden. His blog is at The Closet Grandmaster
So far he has live-blogged three days of the Olympiad, and has posted many pictures that will let you see how the event is presented.
The Friday Xmas Swiss
This event started Friday the 14th of November and a good crowd of 60 entries is one of our best turn-outs for the year. It promises to be a hard fought event with Kempen, Wallis, Lindberg, Cheng, and Saw among the top seeds. You are assured of very even games in this event as the competition is divided into divisions (groups of 8 for the top four divisions). Provisional pairings for this event are posted (usually on Saturday night) on the OzChessbulletin board > Events at Box Hill Chess Club. (Use the default SKIN not the AQUATEEN skin for reading pairings at this site. <Go to the home-page for the site and choose DEFAULT skin in the low left hand corner>).
Sunday coaching notes
Term 4 Sunday coaching are now well on the way with David Hacche taking the elite Sunday morning group during Darryl’s absence. The attendance is reasonable; but there is room for a few more.

The Sunday afternoon classes, coached by a group consisting Rukman, Derek, Rengan, and Jason, are just making their way with many places still open.
This session is good value for parents now that we have received a generous grant from Boroondara council and the Rotary club of Balwyn.
The scheme will be viable in 2009.
Good news for novice players in the vicinity.

2008 Australian Schools Teams Championships ; report thanks to Kerry Lyall.

The 2008 Australian Schools Teams Championships were held on the 6-7 December 2008 at the beautiful Rostrevor College in Woodforde in Adelaide.

Many of the Victorian participants have played or still play at the Box Hill Chess Club including:

• for the Scotch College team who played in the Secondary Open: Zhigen Lin, Eugene Schon, Derek Yu (captain) and Nicholas Liu;
• for the PLC team: Sally Yu (captain) and Susan Sheng;
• for the Greythorn Primary School: Bobby Cheng.

Many of the players, both from Victoria as well as other states stayed in the boarding school, just a few minutes from the playing hall. The facilities included table tennis, billiard tables as well as a lovely oval and an unheated swimming pool. – As it was cool weather, I don’t think too many children went swimming. So there was time for players to socialize as well as have fun playing chess.

There was a free barbecue that the children all enjoyed on the Saturday evening, while having a chance to catch up with new as well as old friends.

Ms Lindsay Simmons, MP for Morialta, made the Presentation of Prizes on Sunday afternoon.

All Victorians should be proud of the final results. In particular, the Scotch team performed spectacularly in the Secondary Open with a 7-point margin ahead of its nearest competitor!

1 Scotch College, VIC 19.5
2 Sydney Grammar, NSW 12.5
3 Hawker College, ACT 11
4 King's Christian College, QLD 9.5
5 Prince Alfred College, SA 5
6 Seton Catholic College, WA 2.5

PLC came third on count back ahead of Daramalan College, ACT in the Secondary Girls

1 Somerset College, QLD 16.5
2 North Sydney Girls High S NSW 14
3 Presbyterian Ladies' Coll, VIC 10.5
4 Daramalan College, ACT 10.5
5 Wilderness School, SA 8.5
6 SA Composite Team, SA 0

In the Primary Open, Greythorn Primary School came third

1 Penshurst West Public, NSW 15
2 Somerset College, QLD 14.5
3 Greythorn Primary, VIC 12
4 Mitcham Primary, SA 8.5
5 Hawker Primary, ACT 7.5
6 Magill Primary, SA 2.5

In the Primary Girls, Mount View Primary School came fourth

1 Somerville House, QLD 19
2 Summer Hill Primary, NSW 12.5
3 Curtin Primary, ACT 12.5
4 Mount View Primary, VIC 12
5 St Michael's Lutheran, SA 4
6 SA Composite Team, SA 0

Individual results that should be especially mentioned include the following Victorian boys who all achieved 5 out of 5 games: Zhigen Lin, Eugene Schon and Bobby Cheng. Nicholas Liu achieved 4 out of 4 games (Nicholas missed one game so the Scotch reserve had an opportunity to play a game.) Well-done boys!

Leteisha Simmonds from Queensland who achieved 5 out of 5 games had another excellent result. Leteisha was one of the members of the Ergas Elite Chess Training Squad who trained July in Canterbury.

Thanks to Charles Zworestine and Roland Eime who were the arbiters for the tournament.

Thanks to the organisers and to the parents and teachers who accompanied the Victorian team members to Adelaide.

Best wishes
Many of our members plan to play in major events over the holiday break. Best wishes to those who will play in the Australian Open at manly in Sydney, the Queenstown Classic in New Zealand, and the Australian Juniors in Adelaide.
For those just taking a holiday break, the newsletter writers offer best wishes and a safe return.

Default BOX HILL AND CANTERBURY JUNIOR CHESS NEWS … ISSUE 2009.1– January 1

Start dates for 2009
.
Friday 23rd of January 2009 for social games
Sunday 1st of February 2009 for novice coaching
Tuesday 3rd of February 2009 for junior coaching
Sunday 8th of February 2009 for FIRST Rookies and Queens tournament

The winners of the 2008 Canterbury Summer Swiss
This was a very strong event which included former Australian champion Doug Hamilton, Igor Dyment from St Petersburg, Box Hill OPEN winners Chris Wallis and Leon Kempen, a previous Club Champion Sam Chow, and Victorian Championship and Australian Masters participant Carl Gorka, et al. But it was youngster Bobby Cheng who took clear first place. A fantastic result earned by Bobby. Full list of placegetters available at CSS results

Our Autumn Cup starts on Friday the 6th of February
I have received two entries already as the flyers were available during the CSS in December.
Keep an eye on the home-page of the Club web-site and we will post detail there.
The entrance fee for the Autumn Cup has been reduced this year from $25 (early bird) to $15 (eb). This is a reduction that members will notice for many events at BHCC and CJCC in 2009. It has become clear that there has been a boom in strong events being held around Melbourne. In particular the Elwood Bendigo Bank week-ender, the Victorian Championship, the Australian Masters, Noble Park events, and the Winter Interclub have been resurgent and are all competing for the same small pool of strong players. These same players are often entering for interstate and international events as well. It is clear that BHCC should recognise the trend and return to concentrating on the best Club events possible. Our target is to have large fields, and low entry fees is a key factor to achieve this. We will run two feature events during the year, the BHCC Championship and the BHCC OPEN where prize-money will be maximised by seeking sponsorship. But all other events will run on smaller entry fees and hence smaller prize money.

The Victorian Blitz championship
This will be held on February the 1st, 2009, and will be managed by Chess Victoria.
Entry details at 09 CV Blitz championship
Games will be 3 minutes with a 2 second increment.

The Australian Junior Chess League
This has been recently formed and continues to impress with the resource material it produces for the benefit of players and parents.
Two terrific links caught my eye, and you might consider book-marking them
A draft copy of the “Rules and Conditions for Overseas Junior Events” is on the website. Please see

What are the Junior International Events

This has previously been circulated to all state organizations and is now available for general comment. This document will be used as part of the application process for future international junior events and is intended both as an informative guide and to detail expectations of parents and players.

Junior Blog

NSW parent Siow Weng Nian has created a fabulous new resource.

Searching for Magnus Carlsen/Hou YiFan

It has plenty of news and ideas with a junior focus
