This was not due to a lack of fighting spirit. The player's reached a position where they both had to repeat moves or suffer a serious disadvantage. Adam Hayman gave his opponent an easy win by allowing his mobile to go off. How can this be I tell them every week TURN YOUR MOBILE OFF! March Queens and Rookies Cup on March 16.
The Rookies Cup held once a month is a reminder how much fun chess can be. It is great thrill to watch a youngster win his first game or two at the Club and hurry to his waiting parents with the story of how “this was a good move’, and “ I had him beaten from the start”. There are plenty of chances for everyone to win a game or two in this 7-round-event held between 12.30 and 5pm. You don’t have to be a trophy winner to count it as a successful afternoon of fun. A few strong adults are regulars for the adult cash prize and this is welcomed as it gives an opportunity for the more experienced youngsters to test themselves out against really good players. The trophies are sponsored by George Zaprudsky’s coaching business called ZedChess. As round 1 started there were a few glitches of players left without an opponent, and players left out of the pairings. We work hard to avoid these problems and must be close to having a clean start one day. The canteen did solid business all day and sincere thanks go to Antoinette Ziffer and Christine Qin for their hard work. Just prior to the trophy ceremony our Captain, Gerry Hartland took the opportunity to present a few annual Box Hill awards > Justin Tan received the ‘most-improved’ junior award for his startling increase in rating in 2007. It was a jump in rating that may never be seen again by any player; certainly the largest we have ever seen. > Leon Kempen received the ‘most-improved’ award for his improvement in rating in 2007. In recent years this award has been the preserve of rapidly improving experienced juniors such as Eugene Schon, Zhigen Wilson Lin, and Chris Wallis. For Leon to improve his rating in this climate of points-claiming juniors is very commendable. > Toni Ziffer received the best Clubman award for her efforts in encouraging attendance at Rookies events, and her managing of the Canteen in 2007. The Rookies trophy this month was won by Cedric Antolis. Six tied for 2nd place. John WP Wong won on scrutinised count-back from Justin Tan, Anurag Sannidhanam, Nicholas Liu, Bryan Ng, and Kyle Gibson(Kyle was in J2, and to feature in J1 prizes is his PB). Kyle won J2 outright with Daniel Yuan a clear 2nd. Newcomer Gene Lai won J3. 2nd place required a count-back where Reuban Nowak collected the trophy closely from Sean Lin, PeterWallmueller, and Robin Zhou. Zachary Loh won J4 and Joseph Wong just edged Lachlan Scott for 2nd on count-back. J5 had three equal firsts. Enoch Fan, Almog Leyzerman, and Euan Reid. The Queens trophy was shared by Vivienca Luong and Charlotte Dilnutt. Carl Gorka won the $30 adults cash prize and Leon Kempen, Joerg Wallmueller and David Flude shared 2nd. Congratulations to all winners and players, and thanks to all helpers. April 13 Rookies and Queens Cup. There was a very good turn out of 56 for our March tournament and we hope for an even better roll-up in April. 2008 Autumn Cup round 5 completed The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn The draw for round 6 has been thrown into chaos by the continuing absence of some of our top players [and some of our lesser lights] at the Sydney SIO. Unfortunately not everyone told the arbiter of their need for a postponement of those who did Francisco Chung, Bobby Cheng, Eugene Schon, and Michael Chan had the opportunity to have postponements arranged. Others will be given a ½ point bye. Latest draw is now on the web site with a different top board web site: http://www.boxhillchess.org.au 08 Victorian Junior Championships The Victorian Junior championships will be held during the June July school holidays as follows: Under 12 tournament 7rounds June 28 and June 29 Under 18 tournament 9 rounds from June 30 to July 3 Tuesday New season Swiss There were big absences in the Tuesday tournament as well. Some of our juniors do not seem to realise that tournaments do continue during school holidays and it remains necessary to inform the arbiter in case of unavailability Good for Laurence Matheson Murphy Guo, Joseph Wong, Kit Ming Foo Adam Hayman and newcomer Michael Tanner Murphy, Joseph, and Adam being rewarded with good wins. It will be necessary for members to renew their annual subscription to the Club so as to be eligible for our premier event. The recent AGM left the subscription rates at $75 FULL, and $60 CONCESSION. The Championship has a proud history starting in 1952 with a win to Brian Robson. Greg Frean won it 5 times in a row in the 1970’s. It was a 6-way tie in 1991, requiring a playoff that saw Rod Macfarlan emerge as the successful champion. The oldest player to win our championship is John Kable, who is our Public Officer for lodging returns with the Corporate Affairs Office. So, who will be our 57th winner? In 56 years most wins have been by a seniors, but juniors have won 3 in the past 5 years. The Club Administrators would appreciate early entries to the Championship, accompanied by renewal of annual subscriptions for Club membership. Pick-up a flyer over the next week or two and update your contact details. April 13 Rookies and Queens Cup.
There was a very good turn out of 56 for our March tournament and we hope for an even better roll-up in April. 2008 Autumn Cup round 6 completed The tournament that starts in summer but finishes in autumn The results for round 6 have finally been completed and we can look forwards to an exiting last round. By virtue of his draw against highly rated Fide master Geoff Saw Club champion Chris Wallis has maintained his half point lead over the field but a draw in the last round may not be enough to secure outright first. See final draw on the BHCC web site http://www.boxhillchess.org.au 08 Victorian Junior and Open Championships Flyers for these important tournaments will be available next week Meanwhile tournament details are available on the CV website http://chessvictoria.netfirms Tuesday New season Swiss The big absences continued in the Tuesday tournament in the last round which has spoiled the tournament somewhat. However main players saw the tournament through Shane Lawson beat Rad Chmiel on the showboard in a nice game [which drew applause from the spectators] to secure first place and $50 prize Second prize of $30 went to David Flude who promised his winnings to the Olympiad appeal. Under 1000 winner was Oliver Lemmel with $20 prize in his best result so far with Joseph Wong doing very well to come second in this section to collect $10 for his pains. Code:

June Rookies Cup.
The June 15 Rookies is actually the 3rd Sunday in June The second being the Queens birthday weekend when we will have the Victorian Open at the club. The 15th June will also be a good time to enter for the Vic Junior championships The early bird discounts will still be available and you will go straight onto the entry list Tournament details are now on the web site www.boxhillchess.org.au Tuesday Autumn Swiss Round 5 completed Round 5 of this interesting tournament still left us with a bye even after the influx of new players Laurence again came off the board with a 1/2point, this time joined by Kai who could not convert his bishops of opposite colours against the ever improving Kit Ming. Fludey proclaimed his loss against Rad due to his mixing up of 2 lines [are there 2 lines in the Blackmar] there by not giving his opponent a great deal of credit, but then which chess player does It was good to see Bill return to the winners list he had me worried for a while Code:

Vanja Rosenblat and Stephanie Ang returned to the winning list and in the battle of the sisters Savithri came out the winner against Janaki. The draw for round 6 is up on the website: http://www.boxhillchess.org.au so on Friday we see the clash between master and pupil on the website: Saw v Wallis and perhaps a little reminder in the BHCC championship a play-off for the title is required when the tournament is undecided 2008 VIC OPEN The early bird discounts finish this weekend so now is the time to present your entry either at the club on Friday or by post before the weekend. Believe me playing in a team is a different experience altogether. You will realise that you are not alone As a Box Hill or Canterbury Junior player you will have home ground advantage. This competition will be the biggest thing at the club. So where is everyone. Entry fees will be low $15 per player maximum. Schedule is easy, one game every 2 weeks. You will see some great players. 2008 CV Vic Open the promised reports from outside sources have not materialised. Well I did say not to hold your breath. Rookies Cup.
Sponsored by Zed chess: www.zedchess.com.au Contact coach George Zaprudsky The next event will be held on July 13 immediately after the finish of the Ergas training tournament and when I say immediately after I mean immediately after Prize giving of Ergas is at 11.45 Rookies starts 12.30 Novice Coaching Term 3 Details for the third term of the Tuesday coaching and the Sunday coaching are now available in the Canterbury Junior Section of the BHCC web site http://www.boxhillchess Here is a brief report by Derek on the Sunday afternoon novices Sunday Afternoon Novice Coaching Report Term 2 Over the past term, a group of young chess enthusiasts have been learning the tricks and traps of our game on Sunday afternoons. With coaches Rukman Vijayakumar and Derek Yu coaching the junior novice classes and Trevor Stanning taking the Adult novices, the Chess Club has been buzzing with activity with many excited players eager to learn. They are improving extremely quickly and it is a pleasure to see so many young people wholeheartedly enjoying chess.Derek Yu 2008 Box Hill Championship. Bulletin for the final round. The tournament belongs to Geoff Saw as he finished on 8.5/9, and the next best were Douglas Lindberg and Bobby Cheng on 6.5/9. This was a commendable result for Geoff. I looked at our fancy new Honour board, to see if Geoff had been Club Champion previously, and noticed that an update was needed to also include the 2007 winner, Chris Wallis. My guess is that the gestation period for the production of the new Honour board threw our usual cycle of up-dates a little out of synch. And, given that we seemed to have switched from black lettering (old board and maintained each year by John Kable) to gold lettering (new board and probably looking for a new volunteer for updates), the Committee probably needs some-one to put their hand up to manage this update. So, well done Geoff, but it could be a little time before your name is ‘in lights’. Chris Wallis had a good tournament to date but dropping ½ to Peter Frost set his campaign back which included a loss to Geoff. Bobby Cheng has done very well; his remaining two hurdles are how to beat Chris and Geoff. Eugene Schon has had 4 half-point results and that represents his next challenge for a step-up in grade. Efrian Tionko is showing much improvement, that may be a result of attending the Sunday morning elite coaching from GM Daryl Johansen. Gene Lai has come in as an un-rated junior and achieved a commendable 4.5/8 to date. Linden Lyons has shown that the 44th seed can have good results as a consequence of study of the game. Stephanie Ang won two games against seeds much higher placed than her. Well done Steph. Note from the arbiter Chris Wallis was unfortunately not available for the last round and had to take the bye 2008 CV Inter-club competitions We have had a few responses from interested players but mainly most members are sitting back waiting to be asked. Can we please try and be a bit more PROACTIVE and show some interest The 2008 interclub competition will be held at our club fortnightly on July 4,July 18, August 1, August 15, and August 29. Club President’s message – Gladys Liu July 2008 Box Hill Chess Club has always been a busy place for learning chess and for having excitement of chess tournaments. In recent months, it has been busier than ever. In addition to our regular coaching and tournaments, not only had we held the Vic Open a few weeks ago, we are currently holding the Vic Junior Under 12 and Under 18. Straight after the Vic Junior, there will be the Ergas Elite Junior Chess Training Camp (7 July to 13 July). The best junior players from all over Australia will be coming to our Club for the training. Our Committee has been great in attempting different tasks and has performed remarkably. In order to make it easy for more volunteers to know what to do, Trevor is developing a handbook with checklists of jobs involved in different roles. Getting volunteers has been one of our biggest challenges. Fortunately, many people (mostly parents) have willingly helped with the Canteen, at Registration and with the computer at the Vic Open and Vic Junior. I urge you to put our hand up for our future events. With your support, we are confident that we will all do a very fine job for our expanding Club and all our members. Happy chess playing. July Rookies Cup. Sponsored by Zed chess: www.zedchess.com.au Contact coach George Zaprudsky The next event will be held on July 13 immediately after the finish of the Ergas training tournament and when I say immediately after I mean immediately after Prize giving of Ergas is at 11.45 Rookies starts 12.30 The 2008 CV Winter Interclub competition. This is a Chess Victoria event that is open to all affiliated chess clubs. It has not attracted the numbers that were seen 20 years ago when there were a lot fewer options to participate in chess events. Twenty years ago it was rare for Melbourne players to visit Queenstown, Canberra (for the Doeberl Cup), Ballarat (for the Begonia), Adelaide, Gold Coast, and Parramatta all in the one year. In 2008, there are quite a few players attending most of these. Thus, a lower key event like Interclub has lost its allure as the way to meet players from other districts. Nevertheless, those that do participate usually find the experience of playing in teams, and meeting new players, to be enjoyable. For 2008, Chess Victoria trialled the introduction of substantial prize-money as an attraction to kick-start a return to large numbers of participants. When the entries closed last Thursday night it was clear that this initiative had not produced entries from Dandenong CC, Melbourne CC, nor any Clubs west of the Yarra. Round 1 clashed with a big tournament scheduled for Adelaide this week-end, necessitating some postponements of Interclub for round 1. A scratchy start to the event unfortunately. I believe the next rounds will proceed quite smoothly and a good time will be had by the participants. These was good feed-back from some observers that they were able to watch the very interesting A Grade game Omar Bashar v Derek Yu via the internet, captured move by move on our DGT board software, through the link http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/live/tfd_full.htm You can dial in and still see this game on display. (Within a week it will be archived and replaced by the next feature game). The next round of Interclub is on Friday the 18th of July. Visitors are welcome to watch. 2008 Vic Junior championships There were 28 players in the u18 section of the championship most of whom were either Box Hill or Canterbury Junior members with CJCC member Cedric Antolis taking out the title on countback from Bobby Cheng who picked up the under 16 title. The under 14 trophy went to Laurence Matheson when who triumphed when his competitors fell at the last hurdle There were 66 players in the under 12 sectionThe winner of the u 12 title was the aforementioned Bobby Cheng who came home with a picket fence score. The under 10 title went to Michael Chang with Peter Wallmueller taking the under 8 there were not enough players to provide a real battle for placings except in the under eights where Anna Sing, Caryna Ha, and Aashna Shah presented a close contest with Anna taking the title on count back Full details of both tournaments can be seen on the CFV website http://www.chessvictoria.netfirms.com Coaching Term 3 Details for the third term of the Tuesday coaching and the Sunday coaching are now available in the Canterbury Junior Section of the BHCC web site http://www.boxhillchess Busy weeks at the Club. The Box Hill Championship finished on Friday 27th of June as reported in the previous newsletter. This was followed by the Junior Club hosting the Victorian Under 12 Championships on Saturday-Sunday 28-29th of June, and immediately afterwards the Victorian Under 18 Championships, Monday 30th June to Thursday 3rd of July. Without catching breath, the next day we hosted the first round of the Victorian Interclub competition on Friday 4th of July. Next week we host the national junior elite training squad sponsored by Prof. Ergas (from Canberra). Twenty-four of Australia’s best juniors visit for coaching from the best coaches from each State. This includes 3 grand masters and quite a few Olympic representatives passing on insightful tips to the next generation of chess-players. The activity does not stop there. We have a GRADES tournament starting on Friday 11th July and a ROOKIES tournament on Sunday 13th July.

Part 2
10 GOOD REASONS FOR PLAYING CHESS 1. Chess is fun! I can honestly say that, irrespective of the result, I enjoy every game. I began came to play chess relatively late in life because I had never realized that it could be so much fun. You don’t know what’s going to happen next in a game so you are actually living out a military battle story. Like all good stories, it has an introduction and setting (opening), development of plot (middle game) and a conclusion (end game), often with twists and surprises on the way! 2. Chess is good for your brain. We all know that chess is good brain exercise. Countless studies have shown that chess improves the working of the mind. Chess rewards both good logical analysis and imaginative play. Chess helps students to learn how to think –the most important skill we ever exercise. And in older people, chess keeps the brain active. Our club has some inspirational senior players who are still able to play at a very high standard. Chess really is the best all round brain workout. 3. Chess is a challenge. Chess has wide appeal because it is both easy to play and difficult to master. Irrespective of whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned expert, the ratings system makes it easy to ascertain whether your game is improving and, if so, how rapidly. You can set your own personal goals, which are SMARTING – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. While you play other players, you are really competing against yourself to see how skilled at the game you can be. Improvement in chess, as with every endeavor of any value, is inevitably accompanied by setbacks and disappointments. Yet chess is a forgiving game in which we can learn from our mistakes and emerge stronger when we start again on a new day. 4. Chess teaches you to have respect. In chess there is often a very fine line between victory and defeat. Even the best players can make blunders. Even where there is a high rating difference, upsets sometimes occur so is both dangerous and disrespectful for higher rated players to play moves quickly and casually without giving each move proper consideration. Any experienced player will confirm, usually though personal experience, that there is no room for complacency when facing young or lower rated opponents. In addition, club chess teaches you how much hard work is necessary to become a strong player so you naturally develop respect for players who are much stronger than yourself. Having respect for your opponent, whoever they may be, is good for you and for your game. 5. Chess is a great forum to get to know people. You can meet and get to know all sorts of people in a chess club. There is no need for mindless small talk and chitchat as you already have something in common – a love of playing chess. You get to share quality time with your opponent free of distractions and your game is a shared story which is unique to the two of you. A player’s style (e.g. attacking, defensive etc) can also reveal much about that player. I count it a privilege to be able to spend game time with each of my fellow club members and to get to know them better. 6. Chess forces you to be honest with yourself. In chess, you are forced to accept responsibility for the standard of your play. There is no one else to blame but you if things are not going well. Yet a loss can often teach you much more about yourself than a win. If you wish to improve, you must consider not only your mistakes but also the reasons why you made those mistakes. For example: Were you being reckless with that sacrifice? Were you being overly cautious by not making the most of an attacking opportunity? Were you overly complacent? Did you allow your emotions to get the best of you at the crisis point of the game? Have you been getting enough sleep lately? A loss can often reveal to you the existence of a weakness that requires attention if you are to improve. Only if you are honest with yourself can you identify and rectify your weaknesses. 7. Chess teaches planning. In chess it is important always to have a plan. Plans can and do change but without a plan you are doomed to fail. By learning to plan in chess we can learn to plan and adjust our plans in our study, work and home life. As a result we can become better organized and be more positive about the future. 8. Chess teaches self-discipline. I have seen and heard many suggestions for improving one’s chess. I am convinced however, that lasting improvement only comes with lots of hard work and practice, practice, practice. Of course, it takes self-discipline to put in the necessary hard work when there are so many other immediately self-gratifying things to do. By making that regular and consistent effort, however, we improve and get closer to achieving our own potential. Improvement is measurable through our ratings system. The link between the hard work and practice and the result improvement is easily seen. 9. Chess is an international game. Chess is arguably the most widely played and universally accepted game in the world. It is particularly popular in some parts of the world, such as the Eastern European countries, and is growing in many Asian countries including China. You can travel almost anywhere in the world and chances are that you will always find a warm welcome at a chess club. 10. Chess educational resources are plentiful. Today there are more books, software, DVDs and resources on the Internet devoted to chess improvement than ever before. There are also chess coaches available to assist anyone who wishes to improve more rapidly. If you are keen to improve the standard of your play there are resources available to suit your particular needs. So there has never been a better time to join a chess club.
