Default Melb Chess Club wants to be #2

The MCC today submitted to Chess Victoria a bid to run the Victorian Open weekender (see attachment). Please note that this is a bid only at this stage and so details within may well change.

Key Points of Bid:

1. Long term investment in the Vic Open to turn it into the #2 weekender in Australia (after Doeberl Cup). Victoria is the best state for chess and it's a shame the Ballarat Begonia weekender is the only one to get over 100 players. The re-energised Victorian Open will hopefully change that!

2. Tornelo sponsorship brings the prize pool to $8500!!

3. Best prizemoney I've ever seen for U1200 ...

4. In an effort to encourage new players to play rated tournaments a 50% discount on entry fee for unrated players! I think ALL tournaments should make this standard.

5. 2 tournaments - Tornelo Vic Open (open to all players) and Vic Minor (U1600). Both events 7 round Swiss, games 90+30.

Now we wait for the CV decision. Feedback and ideas are welcome!

Smart thinking Batman. These are the sort of ideas that are needed to generate new players.

What is currently the number two tournament, or is it a new #2 each year with fluctuating attendances?

If I had to guess, it used to be the Gold Coast Open before they moved it to the sticks.

Yeah, Gold Coast with 124 players or NSW Open with 144 players are both up there.... then there are some which come and go depending on organisers.

Default Vic Open and Minor

Hi everyone,

I know this at the moment is sparking a little interest amongst the Victorian chess community and I just wanted to say it is a good idea, however I do agree with Narelle from chesschat. The minor section should be FIDE rated for the price of the entry fee that is asked.

Otherwise I would be more inclined to go and play in the NSW Minor for less entry fee and almost the same amount of prizes that is been offered in this bid.

This was the entry fee of this years NSW Minor:

U1600
Adult $70 $90
Junior [U18] / Full-Time Student [U25] $63 $81
Aged Pensioner $59 $76
The first price is early bird entry fee and the second is normal entry fee.

The prizes were:

U1600 Prizes
1st $900, 2nd $600, 3rd $400, 4th $350, 5th $250, 6th $200, 7th $150
U1450-1300 1st $300, 2nd $150, 3rd $100.
U1300 1st $300, 2nd $150, 3rd $100

Unless it can be matched with it been FIDE rated I would play in the NSW Minor next year.

These are just my thoughts and I am just expressing them on to the organising team.

Breaking news (just been emailed by CV secretary) - Box Hill to host 2012 Vic Open...

Best of luck to the Box Hill Chess Club who recently won the rights to the Victorian Open ahead of the Tornelo sponsored MCC bid.

The CV Secretary is in the process of penning feedback to the bidders.

who abstained? Am asking because of a fairly obvious conflict of interest...
Would love to know who exactly voted and how.

The reason for the decision has just been released.

Basically the original proposal wasn't considered. Only 1-year bids were eligible, the fact that the MCC bid was a 3-year investment into the event meant it wasn't considered.

I am not sure I understand what you mean. Can you please clarify?

I find it hard to explain because there is no logic....you'll need to ask a CV person to better understand.

My understanding is that the bid was not considered because the 3-year sponsorship deal was contingent on 3-years.

From the other forum Kerry Stead posted:
"CV called for bids for the 2012 Victorian Open. MCC submitted a bid for 2012-2014, which was the bid that was publicised. CV then asked for a bid for 2012 only (as was originally called for) & MCC submitted another bid (which was not publicised). Box Hill also submitted a bid for 2012. The executive felt that the Box Hill bid for 2012 was superior to the MCC bid, so awarded the event to Box Hill accordingly."

CV required MCC/me to submit a one-year-only bid and as the sponsorship was contingent on 3-years the one-year bid was obviously not much different from previous events...basically nothing special.

So BHCC submitted a 'nothing special' bid which beat the CV-required-MCnothing-special bid and the (IMO) quite powerful original bid was not considered.

I guess the logic goes that even if the 2012 Tornelo bid was better than the BHCC 2012 bid they didn't want to lose the OPTION of getting an even better bid for 2013 and 2014..... and of course because BHCC hasn't submitted their bids for those years then, theoretically, anything could still happen.

It's a case of 2 birds in the bush being much more highly valued than 3 in the hand.

Or is it the case of one PRESENT superior bird in the hand being inferior to 2 potentially better future birds , because CV is inundated year after year with new and better tender submissions , so they daren't lock in a superior 3 yr one NOW ?!
