Hi everyone
After a discussion with Trevor Stanning (MOZ) on the ratings thread, I have compiled a test-case rating list for the CJCC Rookies Cup events. This is not an OFFICIAL list - in fact it hasnt even been endorsed by CJCC or BHCC or any other official body. Although Trevor Stanning did say something along the lines of "be my guest" if I wanted to compile it. The list is based on the MCC Allegro Ratings and has been started based on the MCC Allegro ratings of those who have one. Those who dont have an MCC Allegro rating but have a regular ACF rating above 1000 have had that rating used. All other players have started as unrated - even if they have an ACF rating under 1000. The following players have an MCC Allegro Rating: Marcus RAINE 1855 Rad CHMIEL 1840 Shane LAWSON 1629 Rudolfo D'ONOFRIO 1427 Izabella GAWIN 1421 David CANNON 1388 Sam GLUZMAN 1278 The following players have a regular (not rapid) ACF rating: David FLUDE 1526 Roger CROFT 1515 Olgerts BERGMANIS 1463 Peter TSAI 1348 Max CHEW - LEE 1290 These 12 players form the basis for the ratings. All other 43 players playing in the May 2011 Rookies Cup have started out (for the purposes of this list) as UNRATED. Firstly, here is how the rated players performed and their rating changes for the first list: 1. RAINE, -1 1854 2. CHMIEL, -16 1824 3. LAWSON, -3 1626 4. FLUDE, -18 1508 5. CROFT, -7 1508 6. BERMANIS, -4 1459 7. D'ONOFRIO, -10 1417 8. GAWIN, -9 1412 9. CANNON, +85 1473 10. TSAI, +4 1352 11. CHEW - LEE, +6 1296 12. GLUZMAN, +23 1301 Now for the fun part - new players who get a rating from this tournament! Basically what happens here is that a player gets a rating based on their score against rated opposition. Of the 29 players to get ratings, 14 of them only played one rated opponent - and if they lose to that opponent, their new rating will be 677 points lower than that opponents rating. Of these 14 players, all of them lost to the rated player, except for Ewan Lee who defeated Izabella Gawin and thus got a rating 677 points above his rated opponent! Another 12 players played 2 rated opponents. If they lost both games, their rating will be 677 points below the average of those 2 opponents. However if they won one and lost one (as happened in a few cases) then their rating will be the average of their rated opponents ratings (as they scored 50%) 3 players played more than 2 rated opponents and thus got a rating based on what they scored against these opponents. Dimitry Lee scored 1/4, Henry Lai scored 1/3 and Steven Guo scored 1.5/3 - I suggest that these players new ratings would be somewhat more accurate than many of the players who only played one rated opponent. Anyway, here are the new ratings - in rating order: 2098 Ewan LEE 1685 Zhi Lin GUO 1418 Steven GUO 1388 Tristan KRSTEVSKI 1386 Dimitry LEE 1381 Henry LAI 1178 Adam KUES 1163 Raymond SIU 1058 Jimmy YING 952 Bobby YU 882 George LOUCAS 849 Adrian CHEW - LEE 838 Luis CHAN 812 Carl LOUCAS 775 William LAI 768 Andrew LAU 750 John REID 750 Kevin REN 744 Mike GRECH 744 Emily ZHANG 731 Kris CHAN 731 May - Yi FOO 711 Alana CHEW - LEE 711 Chris FU 711 Tanya KRSTEVSKA 700 Zhi Xin GUO 679 Euan REID 671 Ken WEERATNE 601 Nischal VIVEKANANDA Of these, I suggest that the following are not necessarily (and in one case blatantly) very accurate: 2098 Ewan LEE 1178 Adam KUES 1163 Raymond SIU 952 Bobby YU 849 Adrian CHEW - LEE 838 Luis CHAN 750 John REID 750 Kevin REN 744 Mike GRECH 744 Emily ZHANG 711 Chris FU 711 Tanya KRSTEVSKA 671 Ken WEERATNE 601 Nischal VIVEKANANDA Whereas the following, would have more chance of being more accurate: 1685 Zhi Lin GUO 1418 Steven GUO 1388 Tristan KRSTEVSKI 1386 Dimitry LEE 1381 Henry LAI 1058 Jimmy YING 882 George LOUCAS 812 Carl LOUCAS 775 William LAI 768 Andrew LAU 731 Kris CHAN 731 May - Yi FOO 711 Alana CHEW - LEE 700 Zhi Xin GUO 679 Euan REID So, where to from here? Well now we can all have our opinions about whose rating is accurate and whose isnt! I dont know many of these players at all - so I have no idea how good they are - but I imagine that many BHCC and CJCC players will know them better. I know what you are thinking: "How can so and so be 200 points higher than so and so??? He is heaps better than him! He beats him every time, easily!" Remember, this is only the first rating list on a brand new rating list! It will be inaccurate! For example, I dont know who Ewan Lee is, but Im fairly sure that he is not 2000 strength. Most of these players (including Ewan Lee) have only played one game against rated players - and have got a rating from that game. Some might say that this is a floor in this rating system and I can see their point - but the rules are the rules and I want to follow them consistently. What will happen though, assuming that these players keep playing in Rookies Cup events, is that their ratings will begin to normalise as they start playing against each other. Ewan Lee will have a very hard time keeping that +2000 rating, whereas some of the 700s will take points off the 800s etc. And new players will gain ratings by playing some of these 700-800 type players. Ewan Lee's new rating will drag the ratings up rather than down - especially for new unrated players who play him - but Im happy to wear that, as players are always improving and I see it as better than underated players dragging the whole list down instead - this is what I believe is a problem with the current ACF list. I will keep this rating list up to date for the next year (12 Rookies Cups) and it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Dont take too much notice of the players ratings now - start looking at them when they have played about 50 games against rated opposition - that is when their ratings should start to look normal. Once most of these players have played about 50 games, we could have a very good internal rating system on our hands. After a year, if CJCC or BHCC want to take this list over, they are more than welcome. If not, thats fine too - it will just remain and interesting experiment. Next post, I will publish the whole list in full (in alphabetical order) as well as the list of players who didnt get a rating from this event. I look forward to your comments, Grant Szuveges

Well for a start you might use up to date ACF ratings. Mine is totally different to the one you use. If you do not have an ACF rating list then look at the draw for the Box Hill Championship on the Box Hill web page.
What is really scary is that FIDE are talking of merging their normal and rapid rating systems. Are they totally unaware that many players are far better at normal speeds and especially at correspondence chess than they are at rapid chess. Grant please continue with this work. It is time that someone took it up.

The ACF ratings I used were the ones in the link here on ozchess! I just assumed that these would be correct!
Oh well, I will have to do it all again using the correct ratings.... I must admit, that I was surprised when I saw Jimmy Yings rating as I had remembered it to be over 1000 when he played in the MCC ANZAC Day (Easter) Weekender.... Can someone please post the correct ratings please - even if only for the players involved? I need the current ACF normal ratings for Olgerts BERGMANIS Max CHEW - LEE Roger CROFT David FLUDE Peter TSAI Jimmy YING anyone else who played in the last Rookies Cup with an ACF regular rating over 1000

If so, I say good on you. Its about time the clubs started to break off the shackles of the ACF's lousy rating system.

Here is the new full rating list! A few differences made a lot of difference: Flude, Croft, Bergmanis, M Chew - Lee and Tsai now have their new (rather than out of date) ratings to start the list off and Jimmy Ying and May - Li Foo also have ratings to start the list - bringing 14 previously rated players to the commencement of the list (as opposedd to 12) May - Li Foo's rating was a particularly important addition, because she defeated Ewan Lee - meaning that Ewan's first rating will be 1216 (he scored 1/2 against 1421 and 1011) instead of 2098! (from scoring 1/1 against 1421). The other big advantage of having Foo and Ying's ratings also onboard was that 3 extra players got a rating - Isaac Lee, Amelia Mendes and Damien Picone. Amelia Mendes has the lowest rating on the list at 334 but it is still a few hundred points higher than what she was rated at according to the original touranment/ACF rapid rating. Anyway, enjoy the list!

Now Alex, are you going to update the ACF ratings on your site??? (ie Ozchess). And you can also create a tab to view the MCC allegro ratings if you like - and even these ratings if you want...

Hi everyone, here is the latest rating list. Remember, we are only 2 Rookies Cups in, so most of these ratings will be far from accurate. Only once players have played approx 50 games will the ratings start to sort themselves out. A few interesting things to note, 4 players with MCC Allegro ratings were added to the list (the Van Zyl Smit family and Octavio Martinez) while 2 had ACF ratings (Zachary Loh and Anurag Sannidhanam). 32 or a possible 34 unrated players got a rating from this tournament, so those last two will almost certainly get one next time (if they play). They didnt get a rating this time because they didnt play anybody with a rating. When looking at these ratings, make sure you look at how many games the player has played - anyone with only 1 or 2 games probably doesnt have a very accurate rating at all. Bare that in mind... This was a bumper tournament with 69 players, so I expect that most of the participants next time will have ratings - which means that most players will play 7 rated games in the next tournament. Therefore, I think we will start to see the ratings begin to even out a little bit - although I still dont expect that to start happening until enough players are at around 30ish games. By about 50 games, their ratings should be reasonably reliable. Anyway, have a look at the current list...

Here are the latest ratings after the July Rookies Cup! Gradually getting more players onto the list and the ratings are starting to even out a bit for the players who are playing a lot. That said, they are still not particularly accurate but are looking like becoming so as players get to about 50 games. The biggest improver this time was Chris Fu, who gained 75 rating points. Others to note were Max Chew - Lee +39, Sam Gluzman +43, Kris Chan +55, Amelia Mendes +43, Adrian Chew - Lee +33, Isaac Lee +45. One player also lost 54 points (his rating was probably too high)... Enjoy!

Hi everyone
Sorry it has taken so long to get these up to date: CJCC were updating their website for a while and then I became busy with other things - but now the ratings are totally up to date, and all ready for the April Rookies Cup!!! Well the big question people are asking is "how is the list going?" The list now has approx 215 players on it, so it is starting to look like a "normal" rating list with a large player pool. What this means in reality is that approx 90% of players in each Rookies Cup are rated, and thus most people will play 7 (or at least 6) games against rated players when they play in a Rookies Cup - although some down the bottom end of the tournament only play 3-4 games against people with ratings... More importantly however, we now have 9 players who have played 50 or more rated games - headed by the evergreen Olgerts Bergmanis who has played 62 games. Marcus Raine and Zhi Lin Guo have played 58 each and David Flude has played 57... Alongside these 9 players, we also have another 32 players who have played between 30 and 50 rated games meaning that we have a core group of 41 players who have played 30+ games. What all this means in real terms is that we have approx 40 players whose ratings are on the way to becoming fairly accurate representations of their strength... As Ive said all along, dont expect the players ratings to be very accurate until they have played approx 50 games each! But what we are finding now is that players are getting to that 50 game mark and thus the list is starting to settle down and even itself out. The players who have played 30+ games dont tend to have huge changes in their rating from tournament to tournament - unless of course they have had a starting rating which was way too low (or too high) or something like that. Generally though, players with 30 games under their belts dont really gain or lose too many points - unless of course they have an extremely good tournament... Im hoping that after the April Rookies Cup, that we may have another 10 players reach the 50 game mark, whilst quite a lot more will get to 30 games (maybe 20-25 players). What I am finding now (unlike when I first started this project) is that the players who are finishing on the higher scores generally have the higher ratings - which although it sounds obvious, was not actually the case when I first started doing this: For anyone who ever starts a rating list from scratch, at the beginning, the players who get ratings are those that play against rated opposition - not necessarily the stronger players. The other thing that I am finding is that we are now getting a fairly even spread of ratings accross the board - with most of the regular kids between 700 and 1300. We also have a few stronger players on the list now which have helped to drag the rating pool up a bit - although most have only played 1 or 2 tournaments (Jordan, Hacche, Stead etc). The strongest players who play regularly are Raine, T Narenthran, Kempen, Chmiel etc who are all around the 1800-1900 mark. Next down is a core group of 1500-1700 type players (Bergmanis, Flude, Stimson, Croft, Dimitri Lee, Zhi Lin Guo etc) and then more players between 1000 and 1500 and even more between 700 and 1000. There are less below 700, but still quite a lot to replenish the pool as the 700s get better at chess and turn into 800s, 900s, 1000s etc... Beginners are startiing out with very low ratings but are gaining points quickly and moving into the 600-700 catagory. For instance Amelia Mendes began at approx 300 and is now approx 650 and rapidly heading north! There is only so much that I can discuss here with the date side of things. But what would be really interesting would be to hear from some BHCC or CJCC players: Id like to hear their opinions about how the ratings look. Is there anyone whose rating looks far too low (comparatively) or any surprises. Remember, most of these players are just names to me - all I do is rate their games - Ive never actually seen most of them play chess. I dont know which are kids and which are adults and I dont even know which are male or female in some cases! This where it would be great to hear from some BHCC/CJCC people soon - particularly as a large part of the list hits the 50 game mark. But please dont tell me that so and so has an inaccurate rating when he or she has only played 5 games - of course their rating wont be too accurate after 5 games! Have a look through the list and enjoy! Love to hear any feedback! Cheers, Grant Szuveges
