Peter and Kerry's game was very interesting. I'm not sure how Kerry managed to turn it around.

I didn't see too much of this game as they were tucked in the corner. It was a Bird Opening that seemed mighty complicated. Then, the next I looked Peter was an exchange down and the game was virtually over.

Thought i'd mention- Malcom didn't miss mate in 1 on h1 as people might've gathered from the DGT board. He ran out of time in the ending and that was just some analysis the board picked up.

I offer this in exchange for the Goat's famous victory over FM Eddy Levi

Also thanks to Roger who is a gentleman and a fighter

1. d4 d5 2. e3 Nf6 3. Bd3 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. f4 Bg4 6. Nf3 e6 7. Nbd2 {0} Bd6 8.
O-O Qc7 9. h3 $5 {Not sure if this is good- if white wants to play g4 then Qe1,
0-0, Ne5, Bf5, Be2!! Is a difficult line to defend} Bf5 10. Ne5 $6 Bxe5 11.
Bxf5 {I doubt winning a pawn with Bxd4 is worth it. Also, because of some
slight inaccuracies/slow play black's cxd4 will be stronger than usual.} Bd6
12. Bb1 Rc8 $4 {Annoying. Black's play in this position comes from the
weakness of f4 or b4 (after cxd4, cxd4) and also from white's lack of
development. After Rc8 I assumed white had nothing better than a3- Qf3 is
pretty obvious!!!} 13. Qf3 h5 $5 14. Qg3 {This I calculated- better for white after h5-h4!?
is Qf2 then Nf3} h4 $1 15. Qxg7 $2 Ke7 16. Bg6 $2 Rcf8 $1 17. Bxf7 $4 Rh7 $1
18. Qg5 Kxf7 19. f5 e5 $1 {Better but more complicated is Rg7} 20. Qg6+ Ke7 21.
Nf3 Rg8 22. e4 Rxg6 {Simplest- tough to calculate taking pawns then Bg5 or a
white pawn push} 23. fxg6 Rh8 $6 24. Bg5 exd4 $2 25. exd5 $1 Nd8 $3 {The best
move - after Ne5?? An eventual Bxf6 wins the house for white I'm pretty sure} 26. Rae1+ $5
{Elie Beranjia was very displeased with this move, he says: "In my country we
have expression- when you trying to catch a chicken, don't shoo him, break his
legs." He has a point!} Kd7 27. Bxf6 Rg8 28. Nxh4 dxc3 29. bxc3 c4 30. Rf5 b5
31. Rh5 Bc5+ 32. Kh1 Qg3 33. Rh7+ Kc8 34. Re5 Rxg6 35. Bxd8 Qxe5 36. Nxg6 Qe1+
37. Kh2 Bd6+ (37... Bg1+) 0-1

Round 6 Pairings

I wasn't entirely happy about the 2.5 score group, but haven't the time or energy to work out why, so we go with the SP pairings as promised at the tournament opening

Interesting position to analyse after black accepts the gambit with Nxd4. Well done to Kerry who was accurate in the complications right to the end.

[Event "MCC Open"]
[White "Paul"]
[Black "KS"]
[Result "0-1"]
[PlyCount "42"]

1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. Nc3 c6 {Gurgenidze variation of the modern, themes can
cross-over with the Caro.} 4. Nf3 d5 5. h3 {Idea is to try to make the light
squared bishop look bad. Common for black (without 5. h3) is h5, Bg4, e6 and
swapping the light squared Bishop} h5 $6 6. Bf4 {Better is Bd3, white doesn't
need to fear for his d-pawn after dxe4.} (6. Bd3 dxe4 $2 7. Nxe4 $1 {And
giving up the dark squared Bishop for a pawn would be bad} Bxd4 8. Nxd4 Qxd4 9.
Bd2 $1 $18) 6... Nh6 {Also a common idea in other lines of the Gurgenidze
(with f6, Nf7)} 7. Qd2 {Many moves are possible. White should consider opening
the position given Black's slow development.} (7. exd5) 7... dxe4 8. Nxe4 Nf5 {
Best now is the simple 0-0-0, developing and supporting the d-pawn. I figured
a pawn sacrifice was in order as black is slightly underdeveloped.} 9. Bc4 $5 {
Idea being- if Nxd4, 0-0-0 looks very strong.} b5 $1 {Strong intermezzo- now
after Bb3, Nxd4, 0-0-0 doesn't achieve much due to NxB check} (9... Nxd4 $6 10.
O-O-O) 10. Bb3 (10. Bxf7+ $5 Kxf7 11. Ne5+ Bxe5 12. Bxe5 Rf8 13. g4 $1 $11 {
With some tough defence requied!}) 10... Nxd4 {It's easy to get lost in this
position! I spent half an hour looking at 1. Nd6+, 1. Bf7+, 1. Nfg5, and 1.
Nxd4} 11. Nxd4 $1 {And funnily enough, Rybka thinks the best line is for white
to swap Queens and use the development advantage in the ending.} (11. Bxf7+ $1
Kxf7 12. O-O-O $3 Ne6 $4 13. Neg5+ $3 {1-0}) (11. Qe3 $1 {Threatening Nd6+} O-O
12. O-O $11) (11. Nd6+ $1 exd6 12. Nxd4 O-O {With pressure on d6}) 11... Qxd4
12. Qe2 $11 (12. Qxd4 $1 Bxd4 13. O-O-O Bg7 $14) 12... O-O 13. Rd1 Qb6 14. Ng5
e6 15. Bd6 $1 {Idea is to weaken f7 with tempo} Re8 (15... Rd8 $2 {Would
strengthen white's later idea, Qf3-f4 and then Bc7! blocking the defence of f7}
) 16. Qf3 Qb7 17. Qf4 $1 a5 {All best moves up to this point} 18. Bc7 $5 {Now
the intermezzo f6, Ne4, a4!? leads to crazyness} f5 (18... f6 $1 19. Ne4 a4 $2
20. Nxf6+ Bxf6 21. Qxf6 Qxc7 22. Qxg6+ Kf8 23. Rd3 Qe5+ 24. Re3 Qh8 25. O-O
axb3 26. Rf3+ Ke7 27. Rf7+ Kd6 (27... Kd8 $4 28. Qg5+ $3) 28. Qg3+ Kc5 29. Rd1
Bd7 30. Qe3+ Kb4 31. axb3 Qxb2 $1 32. Qe1+ Kc5 33. Qe3+ Kb4 34. Qe1+ Kc5 35.
Qe3+) 19. c3 $4 {Missing that the b3 Bishop holds back e5- winning the c7
Bishop.} (19. Qd6 $4 a4 $1 20. Bxe6+ Bxe6 21. Nxe6 Kf7 $1) (19. a3 += ) 19... a4 $1
20. Bxb8 axb3 21. Be5 bxa2 {and so on} *
