Default Box Hill Masters

This FIDE rated Round Robin tournament is filling fast.

This is a round robin tournament with ten players.

As at today we have six confirmed entrants (all with existing FIDE ratings) and two more players are exceedingly likely to enter over the next few days. Both the prospective entrants are strong players.

Furthermore we have two emergencies.

So get your applications in fast or risk missing out.

For details see the previous posting.

Default rake to high for potential players

Hi,

I don't like to criticise any chess club because I know they are the backbone of chess in Victoria. However, I would like to point out, from a personal player perspective, that when a chess club is taking a rake of a minimum of 62.5%, that it makes the tournament very unappealing for a player with a Fide rating.

I understand that round robins present unique problems in regards to costs and funding. 20% rake seems the norm for a big swiss, and whilst this may not be practically possible for a round robin, it ought to at least be a rough guide.

Opinions?

hi fg7

First let me say that you will have made the Flavid Dude very excited by the appearance of your post. This year, 2011, will be the second time he acted as Tournament Organiser of the BH Masters Invitational. For the event to have attracted your potential interest is quite unexpected. I am sure there are some who thought you were rusted-on MCC events rather than participating in an Invitational out in the 'burbs'.

Your post prompted me to look at the same event in 2010 (where 90% of the field were already FIDE-rated), and 2009 (where 90% of the A field and 60% of the B field were already FIDE-rated) before the event started. I think this evidence shows a solid core of already-FIDE_rated players do show confirmed interest in the event.

And matey, your use of the word 'rake'... hey, this is a chess tournament, not a poker tournament with some dealer confiscating a house percentage.
At BHCC/CJCC, these events are run by unpaid volunteers.

Now, a question back to you: how much would MCC charge you and your two youngsters for annual membership.
At CJCC, the family membership is $70 all up....covers all 3.
As Bunnings shows by their display, there are rakes, and then again there are RAKES.

regards

Well I did get to your club 4 or 5 times last year and was very impressed with its organisation. Besides my eldest son has fond memories of success there.

Well I guess the format works practically, which is always an important lesson for everybody. I am slightly curious about the ratings of the Fide players. I would almost be a 100% possibility if there was an extra $150 in prize money. I am just pointing out that $60 entry for a second placed $50 reward seems unappealing to me. It obviously works for other players. Furthermore, I am looking to play a bit of Fide Rated chess for various reasons.

Sorry if I offended, but It wasn't meant that way. I think some chess organisers seem to think that a poker tournament and a chess tournament are not similar. When in reality they are very similar in structure. Players pay to play, organisers take an organising fee (the rake) and prizes are awarded.

You make an interesting point. Probably best discussed in another thread. For what its worth I look at MCC charges as value in regards to being open 7 days a week because I attend probably 3 or 4 days.

The tournament is structured for those who want to update their FIDE_rating. We only try to cover costs roughly.
If you have an ambition to win bigger time then you would need to aim for one of our FIDE_rated SWISSES.

This particular event just basically covers costs.

I was not asking a value-for-money question.
A single metric answer would have done. \wink.

Room for it on this thread here >>
