Maybe a bit late to start a thread on the Tasmanian Championships in Hobart however the antics of our favourite chesschat moderator are pretty amusing and worth a comment.
He seems to be staggering from one blooper to another since the Junior Nationals in Hobart. Maybe all that "work" that he did has had an impact on his ability to think coherently. ![]() In his latest howler he asserts that Marcus Bretag going into the 7th (and final) round of the Tas Championship can somehow get to a shared 1st place. "If Alastair loses then Marcus Bretag and David Small can get into tie for first by winning provided Dowden and Frame do not win. So it's fairly complicated." The top two boards being played today are given as " 1 Dyer, Alastair [5] : Lovejoy, David [4.5] 2 Bretag, Marcus [4] : Dowden, Tony [4.5]" Yes it certainly does seem to be "complicated", at least too much so for poor old Kevin to work out! Oh wait a minute, I get it now, Dyer and Lovejoy could have a double forfeit!! Not surprisingly Kevin's current mental frailty is in evidence over the board as well as he faces a tough opponent this am and will finish with a sub-50% score in prospect if he loses that one. BTW I have also heard a rumour that he was defeated by Vincent Horton at the recent Launceston tournament. Wouldn't really be so surprising as young Vinnie is underrated however I have noticed that KBs latest avatar is bunny with 19...Qxh7# on it. Can't help wondering if this is a coy reference to his being checkmated by a junior?? If so, then remember confession is good for the soul! Sorry to gloat a bit but really when I think of the many times that I and others were ridiculed for having poor memories it seems that poor old KB has been busy hoisting himself by his own petard of late. It has been a good strong tournament by Tasmanian standards. Looking forward to hearing if Alastair can win it outright later today. He won the title last year jointly in a three way tie with Tony Dowden and Neil Markovitz. Go Alastair (and Go KB too on that last game. I would hate to see a grown man cry )Phil.

Great news from Hobart.
Alastair Dyer drew his final game which was enough to secure the title of Tas Champion outright and Kevin managed to pull off an unlikely draw with Small (rated 2053) to finish on an impressive 50% score ![]() Well done everyone including Marcus Bretag and David Lovejoy who finished tied in 2nd place (but it would seem didn't actually get a prize?). Kevin has assured everyone that there is nothing wrong with his Maths. The English needs some work though it would appear. No confirmation/denial at this point in time on the encounter with Vincent Horton. Phil.

He may have been ineligible for the title but that does not mean he does not get any prize money. He shared in the prize money for 2nd. Last edited by Bill Gletsos : 03-08-2010 at 04:40 PM Reason: removed MOZ edit |

Thanks for the correction Bill.
Pleased to hear that the 2-3rd placegetters got prize money. Phil.

Thanks Alex.
Unfortunately our illustrious chesschat arbiter has gone to ground in his detox filthbox to lick his wounds with his cronies there. As I make a point of never going to that den of iniquity I won't hear further details of the game with Vinnie, at least not directly. Though I can now confirm that Vincent did defeat Kevin at Launceston but for some odd reason the game wasn't posted on the tournament thread?? (All the other gamers were) Phil.

"Hopeless"
![]() I think you are being a bit tough on us Bill. The full story (which you have neglected to mention) is that the game was NOT published in the tournament thread with Kevin's other efforts. Instead it was posted quietly in an obscure corner of cc. I note that the only reference to the game in the tournament thread was made by someone other than Kevin. Seems like a pretty clear case of Kevin trying to fly under the radar to me. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, the truth will out. I always think that it's better to be up front and manly about it when you stuff up. Phil.

In fact it is just a local use of the generally more advanced software on Ozchess (see for examples: shoutbox detach, and shoutbox corrections and, highlights). It is not hard to find other occurrences. Here is one, in this post. How Competitive Do You Want It To Be? I did offer to post a link to Kevin's relevant post, somehow. But in the face of AO having already deleted, BG not wanting to be associated with the KB post, and KB not wanting to post it here; I think the writing is on the wall. It is therefore, officially, a disowned post.
