The Pheonix tournaments for 2010 are taking on a new dimension. While the intention is to eventually have these tournaments FIDE rated round robins, initially they will not be FIDE-rated.
A new event starts next Thursday 18th February. The change to the advertised schedule has been caused by an attempt to play some games in the tournament online with players interstate. So far there are 7 players signed up to what is scheduled to be an 8-player round robin event, and hopefully the Pheonix tournaments will expand in time. Sorry for any changes to the calendar, we at the MCC hope that this new initiative will prove useful for Australian chess in the future and seek expressions of interest from clubs around Australia who would like to participate in this sort of event in the future. Thanks Carl Gorka

Phoenix Tournament 1 2010-02-18
This is to be an 8 player round robin tournament with a time control of 60 minutes + 10 seconds increment per move. The tournament is to be directed by the Melbourne Chess Club in association with Hobart International Chess Club and the event will be applied to the ACF for rating. At the Melbourne end, Carl Gorka will be the DOP/arbiter, while Kevin Bonham is coordinating the Tasmanian end of affairs, though someone else may be nominated as an official arbiter. The main aim of the tournament is to successfully bring together players from different states of Australia and use the amazing resources the internet has to offer to advance club chess. The MCC as a goodwill gesture are offering all members of Hobart International Chess Club, and their Junior Chess Club honorary memberships of the club for the period of 12 months which will entitle these players to play in our tournaments at the reduced rate which we offer our own members. The 8 players who have entered the tournament are as follows, in the order they were drawn: 1. James Briant (Tasmania) [1306] 2. James Macauley (MCC) [unrated] 3. Frank Lekkas (MCC) [1445] 4. Elizabeth Warren (MCC) [905] 5. Adolph Lekkas (MCC) [unrated] 6. Harrison Briant (Tasmania) [899] 7.Simon Karumbi (MCC) [1083] 8. Jack Puccini (MCC) [unrated] The draw for the tournament was conducted at the Melbourne Chess Club on the night of round 1 with the numbers being drawn by past President Greg Gatto. Round #1 : 2-7 3-6 4-5 1-8 Round #2 : 1-2 7-3 6-4 8-5 Round #3 : 3-1 4-7 5-6 2-8 Round #4 : 1-4 2-3 7-5 8-6 Round #5 : 5-1 4-2 6-7 3-8 Round #6 : 1-6 2-5 3-4 8-7 Round #7 : 7-1 6-2 5-3 4-8 We decided to start the tournament by pairing the Lekkas brothers together, which meant round 7 was officially the first round. The 2 Tasmanian players are due to play each other this week which means that their round 6 game has already been played. On the first night some mishaps occurred. Jack Puccini turned up late and his opponent had left the building, so Jack was paired against Simon Karumbi who was, in turn, due to play one of our friends from Hobart. Jack Puccini and Elizabeth Warren will have to play their game at a date before the last round. And James Macauley’s game against an unknown opponent will have to wait for a later date. The results from the first night at the Melbourne Chess Club were: Adolph Lekkas-Frank Lekkas 1-0 Jack Puccini-Simon Karumbi 0-1 Due to some late negoatiations between MCC and the various online chess servers, it was only agreed very late in the day that the games could be played on the ChessCube site, the site which earlier this year experimented with the South African Open including players from overseas. But because of this, we have had to delay our online games yet another week. Round 6 will be played this week, making the Melbourne players a game ahead of the Tasmanians. Week 2 Thursday 25th February 2010 James Macauley-Adolph Lekkas Frank Lekkas-Jack Puccini Elizabeth Warren-Simon Karumbi Games played between players from Tasmania and Victoria will be played via the internet on the chesscube site with the first games to be played next Thursday, 4th March

Hi,
Nice game by Adolf. Clearly the stronger Lekkas(well maybe not just yet). What I like about Adolf's play is that he has a natural attacking flair that you just don't see everyday. cheers,

Does it mean that they have voting rights at the AGM? I couldn't imagine that they would have any rights, but I would like some clarification on the MCC constitution here. Former Justice Robert Brooking is a pedant for the law at MCC and I wonder how clearly this idea has been thought through by the current committee. cheers, cheers,

Yeah roll your eyes in a mock, but hey I still want clarification.
What does "honorary" membership mean in this context? Obviously, MCC already has "honorary" life members who I think (not 100%) are entitled to vote under our constitution. But these honorary life members are voted upon by all the members of the MCC at the AGM. They are NOT appointed by the committee, they are democratically elected. So where does a 12 month "honorary" membership fit into the club constitution? Obviously it does not fit into the constitution at all because no such membership exists. So in other words these players cannot be regarded as members of the club. So there is little point in calling such people "honorary" members since the committee is not really allowed to constitutionally act in such a capacity. Next we derive the question of reduced rates? Does this mean reduced rate for every tournament at the club for 12 months? We await the committees response on this issue. Now I have no problem with the current committee extending an invitation to people who are NOT club members to play in their tournaments. Certainly, the ideas being tried in the Phoenix tournament are creative and dynamic and ought to be encouraged. BUT, these people ought not to be regarded as being members of the Melbourne Chess club for a plethora of reasons. I await clarification from somebody on the MCC committee as to the real status of these membership claims. cheers,
