Default Baron wins Allegro 48 despite final round loss!

Allegro 48 was massive - in more ways than one! Firstly we had 32 players, but secondly, 5 board 1 games were streamlined live via the dgt board, thanks to some helpful MCC members.

The fun started in the very first round when Michael Tanner scored an upset win over 2nd seed Cedric Antolis, and the upsets continued in the second round when Sylvester Urban and Richard Voon both lost. The top seeds kept falling in round 3 when Douglas Lindberg lost to Rad Chmiel. In the meantime, top seed Michael Baron just kept winning, defeating Marcus Raine, Chris Kolak and David Beaumont to get to 5/5. In the 6th round Baron continued with a win over Lindberg as black after sacrificing the exchange while Kolak-Beaumont went down to the wire on board 2 with Beaumont declaring mate with one second left - after a queen was left en prix in the time scramble! In the final round Baron was crushing Antolis but strangely lost the plot to register his only loss from the tournament. However this loss was still enough to win after Beaumont and Raine eventually drew a blocked up position from a Samisch Nimzo-Indian. Angelos Tsoukalis won the group A prize while new MCC junior Thomas Gawin won the group B prize with 3.5 points. It was great to see 8 new players playing the first MCC allegro and also great to see so many new members sign up today!

From the look of things, at least one game was shown live on an OzChess ancillary link! I wonder if it is possible to show more games, but that to an extent would probably depend on the number of DGT boards available to the MCC.

We can only show 1 game at a time due to only 1 board being available. I'm sorry I had to leave, David couldn't get the last two games going I assume?

Btw, Grant - I left my glasses beside the computer. Did you find a pair laying around or did anyone hand them up? Or were they not there when the board was being packed up?

Default Baron

Michael Baron completely dominated Allegro 49 from start to finish. From what I saw of it all, nobody else ever stood a chance against him this week. Michael steamrolled the field and had won the tournament by the end of round 6. He then went on to play in the blitz and draw with Polish GM Soko who is here visiting for a few weeks - hopefully he can play in next weeks allegro to give Baron a challenge... Chris Kolak jumped into second defeating Douglas Lindberg and Tony Tosevski joined him by defeating Bosko Mijatovic. Elizabeth Warren won the B group with her first 4/7 in an allegro. Rueben Nowak also impressed scoring a creditable 3.5 points.

Default 2 reasons to play in Allegro 50!

Here are 2 reasons to play in MCC Saturday Allegro number 50:

1. Its the 50th MCC allegro since it was relaunched! We have had allegros 50 weeks in a row!!!! Make the 50th your next (or first) allegro! Lets see if we can get 50 for 50!

2. The MCC has a new couch - in burgundy leather. So come down on Saturday, try out the couch and then stay for the allegro - what more could anyone want?

I would love to see 50 players for Allegro 50 - we could even get a photo of them all on or around the brand new couch!

Default Allegro 50 breaks record and Baron wins all 7!

The MCC broke the record for allegro participant numbers for Allegro number 50, with 35 players. Michael Baron was in fine form winning the event easily with wins in all 7 of his games. Brian Fitzpatrick came second with 6 after beating Carl Gorka in the final round while a number of players shared third. Great to see Goran Ilic back at MCC after a number of years away! He scored a creditable 4 points. Also great to see so many MCC members renew their memberships today - and a few new members sign up! We have more than 50 already and its not even the end of January yet! Hopefully we break that record this year too. Of the rest, Michael Addamo started well - after losing to Baron in round 1, he won the next 4 in a row, while Jack Puccini started with a draw with Sylvester Urban and continued on the defeat Simon Karumbi who recovered brilliantly to score 4.5 points.

7/7 Michael BARON
6 Brian FITZPATRICK

1. Baron, Michael 2192 16:W 8:W 5:W 2:W 6:W 3:W 7:W

Question:

Does Baron, Michael play in any other tournaments other than MCC Allegro, i.e. does he participate in any local Allegro's at other clubs, or any inter-state tournaments etc...etc... Allegro at Noble Park Chess Club is very strong...

Great report and looks like a great allegro too!!!

As for Michael he's been a very strong player for over 10 years.. I'm sure he will play a few tournaments this year, he seems to be on a bit of a slow ches hiatus though.

This one was closer then it looks. Brian Fitzpatrick was a piece up against Michael with a better position, then hung his Queen to a knight fork. It was worth noting that Mirko Rujevic, Nick Speck and David Hacche were almost starters.

Good event and allegro continues to get stronger.

cheers,

Default Baron wins another one

Michael Baron continues his good form taking out the 51st Allegro with a picket fence score. Brian Fitzpatrick came second with 6 points whilst Milutin Krunic and a number of the juniors had really good tournaments against strong fields. Great to see 30+ players in consecutive weeks. (when will we get to 40?) Another interesting thing about this allegro was the strength of it, with players rated just under 1650 starting in the bottom half!

Default 3 way tie in Allegro 53!

Allegro 53 attracted 33 players and was an enjoyable day at the MCC. The top seeds were FM Michael Baron and IM James Morris, with Partsi, Fitzpatrick, Kolak and Lindberg all above 1900 biting at their heels...

Baron started well defeating Kolak, Morris and Partsi and it looked like he would run away with the tournament (as usual), but then in round 6, Douglas Lindberg played a really good game to defeat him. This situation left Baron, Morris, Kolak and Lindberg all on 5/6 going into the final round.

In the final round, Morris turned the tables on Kolak to win from 2 pieces vs a rook down while Lindberg also won a game which looked certain to end in a draw against Frank Lekkas. Baron also stayed in equal first defeating Brian Fitzpatrick.

While the top was very exciting, the middle and bottom part of the event also produced competitive chess, with MCCs juniors on the rampage! Ari Dale had a great tournament to finish on 5/7 after beating 3 players much higher rated than him. Another player to impress was Jack Puccini who scored 4/7 defeating (destroying) David Stimson in the final round very quickly. Jack has long been able to play brilliant sacrificial chess, but Jack and consistency havnt always been used in the same sentence. This tournament though, he got it all right, easily accounting for the lower rated players who have traditionally given him more trouble than the higher ones! Finley Dale also impressed with 3.5 points. While only finishing on 2 points, Sreemanth Gurram also seems to have turned a corner, putting up massive fights in all of his games.

6/7 Michael BARON (FM)
6 James MORRIS (IM)
6 Douglas LINDBERG
5 Chris KOLAK
5 Ari DALE
4.5 Dimitri PARTSI
4.5 Peter WOLF
4 Brian FITZPATRICK
