Elwood Chess Club is the only Club with two resident IMs, and also a strong Russian entrant within 10 minutes of the Club.
Perhaps that is the scheduling attraction.

Hi Sobriquet
for all the above plus I live in a very pleasant walking distance from Elwood Chess Club. However, according to this logic how many more titled players has Box Hill Club (my club) than Melbourne Chess Club? (Also my Club)!

Second level attraction factors may also be in play. Perhaps the decision was influenced by electronic display of games to the internet.

Default MCC has 4 IMs

In response to Elwood Chess Club being the only chess club with 2 residents IMs, I can state that Melbourne Chess Club has 4 IMs as members (Guy West, Greg Hjorth, Robert Jamieson and Mirko Rujevic). MCC also has 2 GMs as members (Darryl Johansen and Ian Rogers - though I dont think that he would play in the Vic Champs!) and 4 FMs as members (Michael Baron, Bill Jordan, Doug Hamilton and Grant Szuveges).

In conclusion, Melbourne Chess Club has 10 titled players amongst its membership...

Default The Sandman lands the big Kahuna.

The 2009 Victorian Lexus Championships <details in this post> stepped up a grade today with the confirmation of the entry of Grand Master Darryl Johansen.

There are very few opportunities in Victoria for the strong performing group of U20's to challenge the GM. This has to be the best opportunity because time-controls in the event are superior to the normal weekender scramble.

Challenge GM Darryl Johansen in the Victorian Championship; now I want to see that.

Four venues are involved (see linked post) so all spectators from Clubs should be able to find one to suit for watching.

Mike

I went to 09 Entry information
to read, for the Championship.

Eligibility
Players will be allocated to the tournaments on the basis of rankings as published by the ACF on September 2009 to complete the total number
in each tournament to 12.

There is also a Championship Reserves
And, I agree, the web-site does not specify SWISS or Round-Robin as far as I can see.
I will get in touch with the Tournament Organiser.

-----------

IM Mirko Rujevic
and Eddi Levi now confirmed starters to add to the good news earlier on today that GM Darryl Johansen is a starter.

I think it is just the top 10 players they can get based on ACF ratings.

Default Great clear posting MOZ

It is great to see such a clear and good looking posting showing that the present team of Chess Victoria are on the ball.

One again Chess Victoria is sending out information often.

I sent out this notice to everyone on the Chess Victoria mailing list. If you did not receive this notice by email and wish to receive Chess Victoria mail outs then send me an email.

Thanks to David Beaumont and Trevor Stanning and David Cordover and others, chess in Victoria is really starting to take off!

And Grant Szuveges, who as I understand it, has been the driving force behind the "rebirth" of MCC.

Well done everyone who has played an influential role in Victorian chess!
