Ive got some extra info regarding the tournament.
1. GM Gawain Jones from Britain will be playing. We now have 2 GMs.... 2. Half point byes will be allowed. This will be particularly useful for the Friday night round where there is a clash with the final round of a Box Hill event. I will use this opportunity to apologise to Box Hill Chess Club for that clash. We had no idea about it when we were organising this event. There will be no problem with players taking a half point bye if they are playing in both. Half point byes may also be useful for the Monday rounds for those who cant get time off work. 3. The event should be a GP catagory 5, although we have not spoken to Brian Jones yet. |

A few days ago I was contacted by Igor Goldenberg who said that there is a good likelihood that a venue will be found by the Elwood organizers. We at the Melbourne Chess Club only want to see an event happen over that weekend and in the case of Elwood being able to organize the event, we would step aside and let them do that.
In the time since we decided to organize the tournament in the absence of any details from Elwood, we have secured the participation of 2 GM’s who we would hope could equally play an Elwood weekender as an MCC weekender. We also have a number of sponsorship deals being negotiated, but nothing is definite yet and there is the possibility that any agreed sponsorship could be redirected to another tournament. We also have been in contact with some overseas players who would be interested in coming over for a 9-round FIDE rated tournament. Unfortunately, these will be lost assuming the Elwood organizers decide to run their tournament as a 7 rounder. The MCC committee next meets on July 8th and then we will have to make a decision about our event. If the Elwood organizers have announced details of their event, we will reschedule our event. However, if no announcements have been made, then we will have a tough decision to make. Good luck to Igor, and any assistance we can give, we will. |

Hey Mowcop & Igor,
It doesn't have to be a "them against us" situation. Couldn't this be a joint venture and really build this into a great tournament? In time, this tournament could become a signature tournament for Victoria to rival SIO or Doeberl. Leonard talks about organising an MIO but here is a ready-made competition with a great brand name already (who doesn't know the Melbourne Cup). What do you think? The joint-tournament has the benefit of a few extra pair of hands for organisation, pooled sponsorship, etc. M |

It would probably need some central organisation as the main sponsors, Bendigo Bank, are looking at local sponsorship for local events. So getting the Carlton Branch and the Elwood Branch tojoint sponsor an event might be problematic.

Firstly, sorry to Igor who has tried his utmost to get things going this year. Hopefully Elwood will come back in future years to provide a great event for Victorian chess.
Secondly, the MCC will hold an event over the Cup Weekend this year, though we are not committing ourselves to the long term future of the Victorian long weekend tournament. |

Elwood Bendigo Bank was unable to sponsor the tournament this year.
Best wishes to MCC in organising CUP weekender. I urge anyone who was going to play in Elwood Bendigo Bank championship to play in MCC weekender this year. City of Port Phillip was kind in offering Port Melbourne town hall (excellent venue IMHO). Without sponsorship, however, it's a moot point.

Hi Everyone
Some news past at committee level last night regarding the Cup Weekender: 1. There will be an earlybird discount. All entries confirmed (and paid) before or on September 30th, will receive a $10 discount. 2. There will be a limit of 100 participants in the event. A "first in first served" system will apply. So considering these two points, please enter early and get your well earned discount for doing so! For any further info on the event, call me on 0401-925-075 or Carl Gorka on 0406-021-559. |
