Default Junior Grand Prix Prizes For June And July Allegros

As usual, allegro will take place every Saturday in June and July, but this winter we have something extra for the kids!

As well as the usual prizes, anyone under the age of 18 will be able to compete in a grand prix - whereby each of their scores from the following allegros will be added together to form an overall prize.

June 6
June 13
June 20
June 27
July 4
July 11
July 18
July 25

For example, if you score 3 in one event, 4 in another and 3.5 in a third, your grand prix score will be 10.5

The more you play, the more chance of getting a higher score!

The following prizes will be offered.

1st: $30
2nd: $25
3rd: $20
4th: $15
5th: $10

For any questions, please call me on 0401-925-075

Default Allegro 16

For the third time, the allegro has attracted a field of 18 players - strangely it always seems to attract these big fields when it is competing with a weekender... Anyway, Michael Baron demolished the field convincingly winning the event with 7/7. Chris Kolak and Andrew Fletcher came equal second with 5.5 points.

The big news though was the performance of a number of the lower rated players. Junior Frank Lekkas won the B group with 4.5 points defeating Milutin Krunic in the final round, and equal second with 3.5 were junior Anthong Harris and Elizabeth Warren who scored 3.5/7 against a field rated 500 points ahead of her!

It was great to see so many newcomers playing in their first allegros with everyone playing competively.

7/7 Michael BARON
5.5 Chris KOLAK
5.5 Andrew Fletcher
4.5 Frank LEKKAS
4 Tony TOSEVSKI
4 Simon KARUMBI
4 Ari DALE
3.5 Elizabeth WARREN
3.5 Anthony HARRIS
3 Milutin KRUNIC
3 Bosko TOSEVSKI
3 Endre SIMON
3 James MACAULAY
3 Wilfrado JOSE
2.5 Jack PUCCINI
2 Tristan RAYSOHILL
1 Joshua WATSON
1/3 Steve WERTHEIM

See you all next week for Allegro 17!

Do games we play here go towards our ACF rating?

No, these games are only rated on the 'MCC Allegro rating list'. This list gets updated every week after each allegro. I have already adjusted the ratings after Allegro 16, and Frank, your first allegro rating is 1648. You are also leading the June-July Junior allegro grand prix.

Default Allegro 17

BARON WINS AGAIN

Michael Baron has won the 17th allegro after escaping with a draw in his first game against Domagoi Dragicevic! The event was rather small because most of the kids were playing in Nick Specks junior allegro in the next room. Since there were only 9 players, a round robin was played. The absence of the kids also made the tournament a lot stronger, with many of the players finding the going much tougher than usual...

After the draw with Domagoi in his first game, Baron went on the win 7 in a row. Domagoi also looked headed for equal first until he ran into an Andrew Fletcher opening trap in round 8. After this win, Fletcher looked set to take outright third, but lost in round 9 to Jack Shanks. Andrews loss allowed crowd favourite Chris Kolak to jump into a tie for third. Jack Shanks won the B group prize with 4.5 points.

7.5/8 Michael BARON
6.5 Domagoi DRAGICEVIC
5 Chris KOLAK
5 Andrew FLETCHER
4.5 Jack SHANKS
3.5 Tony TOSEVSKI
2 Simon KARUMBI
2 James MACAULAY
0 Elizabeth WARREN

Allegro will be on again next week as always at 2pm. Be there!

The junior grand prix (June and July) results are as follows.

6 Simon KARUMBI
4.5 Frank LEKKAS
4 Ari DALE
3.5 Anthony HARRIS

Only Simon has improved his score this week moving into first place. The other kids didnt play as they were playing in Nick Specks junior allegro. I expect that they will all be playing next week though...

Yeah, like that's ever a problem in Australian chess - where the adults basically subsidize the junior prizes!

Ive actually put in $100 of my own money for this grand prix to happen. The idea of it is to encourage kids to start playing in the allegro more often. The prizes are only small ($30, $25, $20, $15, $10) but these prizes can mean a lot more to the kids. Hopefully more kids will play regularly, and then become permanent allegro players. The MCC is already throwing in $40 for the first prize in these allegros.
