Well I'm not sure about everyone else but I think FICS Free Internet Chess Server (FICS) would have to be the best free place to verse other people. You could simply use their java site but I'd recommend downloading one of their clients, I use babas chess, (which is still free). The most common time controls for games on FICS would be 5 minutes each or 3 minutes each but you can play slower games. What time controls does yahoo usually use? Then I'd have to say the best place to play chess on the internet would be ICC (Internet chess club) but ICC requires a membership fee. I'm sure there are other places but I think they would be the best of the free sites (FICS) and the best site (ICC). Hope I helped

Hands down FICS and ICC are the best places to play chess online. However, I recommend Theif for FICS, and Blitzin for ICC. Programs like Babas and Dasher are too advanced for my liking. I like simplicity in my interfaces, especially in chess where speed counts big time! If you are messing around with the controls in a time scramble it just becomes that much more difficult to win.

Yeah I agree with the simplicity for the interface and I just swapped fro dasher to blitzin on ICC for that reason. But I find babas chess fairly simple to use but I have never used theif so I might like it better..

Yahoo is one of the oldest and also the one for less serious players. I play there myself sometimes.

Great ideas! Yeah the ICC membership fee is a little steep, but I would qualify for the student membership for much less. I bookmarked it to come back to. In the meantime i'll check out FICS. Definitely time for me to move on from yahoo. lol

Great to hear!
Yeah I only just recently got ICC and I used the student discount. Makes it cheaper but if your not too serious about chess FICS is probably perfect
