King Deep Blue v Kasparov

I wanted to put some games from this historic match up. Eventually in this thread I will put them all up.

What a beautiful endgame position. I guess Deep Blue just didn't calculate pawns on the sixth rank as being worth more than 1 point when it should have been calculating them at about 4 to 5!

You know after he won this game I thought he'd have the series in his pocket. Then he lost

I have always loved these man v's machine matches. It is Interesting how Deep Blue reacts in the later stages of the game. How long did Deep blue take to make a move during this match?

I am afraid I don't know, but this report seems to suggest that Kasparov used a lot more time than the machine.

Game 1:
Kasparov wins!

Garry Kasparov showed us what 'Anti Computer Chess' was today and played cat and mouse with Deep Blue, accumulating small advantages without risking anything. Deep Blue seemed a little bemused at first and played a few innacurate and weakening moves but it came right back into the game with a retreat that no one had foreseen.

Kasparov kept his nerve, and the advantage, but consumed valuable thinking time and could be seen chiding himself at one point when he appeared to have missed the best move.

With the tension rising, Deep Blue was provoked into an unsound attack that weakened its position still further -- but such was the ferocity of its assault that it took all of Kasparov's tactical skill to rebuff the computer.

Although nominally ahead on material, Deep Blue was strategically lost after the queens were exchanged and the world champion methodically wrapped up the endgame.

Deep Blue has white tomorrow, and Kasparov will find it much harder to control the play.

Well, the latest big match had Kramnik and the computer drawing the match, but Kramnik missed a forced draw in the most strange fashion. Maybe I should put that game up so we can all go over it?

It would be interesting to find patterns in the computers play. I wonder if Deep Blue strategy was always weekend after trading queens or if it just happened in this match.

Well DB won the match overall but at the time Kasparov wasn't the best human available to play the machine. Even though he was world chess champion at the time, the ex word champion Karpov had a style of play that was regarded as being far superior against chess computers. And in 97 when the match took place, Karpov was world #2 and still playing great top flight chess.

There is a fantastic documentary you can find online called Kasparov VS the Machine on this game. Documents a lot of the seedy behaviour by IBM, it's filmed personally with Kasparov where he stayed during the match etc etc.

Game.Over.Kasparov.and.the.machine.XviD-cCow.avi | Kasparov machine | isoHunt : the BitTorrent and P2P search engine

There!

You'll need a torrent downloader to download it: "Utorrent" is a good one which you can find on google, then you just click d/l torrent and wait a day or so. Knowing Australian internet the 'or so' could be significant!
